The Wi******er Police Department shared an engaging program about its K9 Unit, highlighting its vital role in community safety and giving attendees a chance to meet two of their five K9s up close.

Corporal Keller was with Dutch Shepherd Igor, and Officer Umbel introduced Levi, the Bloodhound, showcasing the strong bond between officers and their K9 partners. We are grateful to the officers for giving of their valuable time to educate our residents about this programming! 🐾🐕👮

Bluegrass in The Bistro this Friday, 3/20!

The Bistro Concert Series welcomes back Bluegrass performers Red and Murphy Henry for a show of “Ol’ Time Bluegrass” at its best. With more than 50 years of experience, the husband-and-wife team is among the nation’s best legacy Bluegrass performers. Their shows include humorous original songs, old favorites, clever stage patter, and plenty of high-powered picking!

Red came on the Bluegrass scene in 1974 and plays both the mandolin and fiddle. He was selected to teach at the first-ever Bill Monroe-style mandolin camp in Kentucky. He makes banjos, produces instructional lessons, and has developed revolutionary one-piece maple bridges for mandolins. Murphy is a brilliant banjo player and is considered one of the first women to break the Bluegrass glass ceiling. She was one of only three women included in the book Masters of the 5-String Banjo, and in 2015, she received a Distinguished Achievement Award from the International Bluegrass Music Association. She is the author of Pretty Good for a Girl, a history of women in bluegrass.

They have taught Bluegrass at camps throughout the United States, have produced numerous albums and CDs on their own Arrandem Records label, and have played at numerous music festivals and jam sessions, including at their church, First Presbyterian.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10 (cash only). Proceeds help support the SVWC Fellowship Fund. Atlantic Union Bank sponsors the series. SVWC is located at 300 Westminster-Canterbury Dr. Phone 540-665-0156 with questions.

Now that spring is right around the corner, our residents can begin utilizing the Baxter Bowling Greenhouse and our Community Garden. Whether they have a green thumb or not, they can dig in the dirt, take classes, and hear lectures from a horticulturist in the greenhouse.

Or they can reserve a plot in the garden where they are free to grow flowers or vegetables, to their hearts' content! Here again, SVWC provides so many healthy outlets for creativity! 🪻🌸🌻☀️🥒🥕🍅

There is a new exhibit in our SVWC Lawrence Gallery that will remain through May 8. Resident Cari Sherwood has just installed a collection of her captivating watercolors depicting scenes from her wide-reaching travels, and many are for sale. She shared her photography in 2014, and now we are so pleased to share her charming paintings.

Two Master Jewelers are selling unique pieces from the Lawrence Gallery Glass Showcases. Debby Brown has been creating art since she was a child, and she started making jewelry about 20 years ago, focusing on bead stringing and wire wrapping, and, more recently, bead weaving.

Evgeny Zidarov is a lapidary and jewelry artist. The focal point of his creations is always the stone. He combines sterling silver and 14K gold-filled wire to enhance each stone's natural beauty. Working with stones from every corner of the world allows him to showcase each stone and take the viewer on a journey.

All are welcome to visit the Lawrence Gallery in the Main Building (300 Westminster-Canterbury Dr.) any day between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. There is an Artists' Reception this Saturday, March 14 from 4 - 5:30 p.m. in the Abbey above the Gallery. Please join us! For more information, phone 540-665-0156.
