Our August "Pet of the Month" is Sweet Pea, owned by a cottage resident. This precious pup is pretty new to campus but absolutely loves meeting other dogs and people during daily walks. What a perfect name for this furry friend, who is indeed, as sweet as can be! 💕🐾☺️

Each year, our generous residents may donate to the Employee Appreciation Fund through the Residents' Association. Since SVWC staff members are not allowed to accept gifts or tips, this fund enables residents to show their gratitude. The gifts are distributed to employees around the holidays, and they are always incredibly grateful!

Resident Loretta Johnston, a multi-talented artist, has made a significant contribution by creating these clever posters. Her initiative has enabled the committee to keep track of donations in a visually appealing and eye-catching manner. In the first month, and with two months to go, there is already 50% participation. Now that's worth appreciating! 😃💕👍🏻

If you're a nature lover and haven't visited SVWC to view our current exhibit in the Lawrence Gallery, you are missing out. The gorgeous images will be removed next Friday, August 29, so you still have time to see this collection by multiple photographers who are involved with the Shenandoah Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalist Program. But remember, time is running out!

What's more, most of these captivating images are available for purchase. If you find yourself drawn to more than one, we can arrange for duplicates to be produced and framed. The Gallery is open to all, every day from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

August Bistro Concert

Charming songs from France and Poland. On Friday, August 15, soprano Eliza Lucyna and pianist Szymon Czerniak, each rising stars in their field, will present songs by Polish and French composers, Chopin, Liszt, Messiaen, and Poulenc.

The culture of both countries places warm emphasis on childhood. Children dance, play, and sing, and notable composers have transformed simple children’s music into elegant works, often styled as mazurkas and menuettos. Much of the program will be these charming short pieces derived from children’s dances and stories, each a small gem. The Bistro’s excellent acoustics provide an outstanding space to showcase this music. Eliza’s and Szymon’s talents make them well-suited to perform these delightful pieces.

Eliza’s musical career is impressive. She has performed in numerous acclaimed venues across America and Europe, including well-known churches. Her roles have spanned many periods and styles. She began singing professionally as a child and has been a producer, conductor, teacher, and solo soprano for many productions.

Szymon possesses a solid musical education, which includes two years of collegiate football experience as a defensive lineman at SMU. He is a musician’s musician, mentoring many others while still a student himself. He has taught piano as an adjunct faculty member at several conservatories. Tutored by the distinguished Irish pianist John O’Conor, Szymon is currently earning a Doctorate in Musical Arts at Shenandoah Conservatory.

The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10 (cash only) at the door. The concert is open to the public and is sponsored by Atlantic Union Bank. ‍Come to the main entrance at 300 Westminster-Canterbury Dr.

Let's give a huge shout-out to SVWC resident Yvonne Perry, who organized an amazing gathering for staff members on Wednesday. We were all invited to the Canterbury Cafe for a "Make Your Own Chocolate Bar" event, which was such an exciting concept!

Each participant received a tray with a plastic mold. You could choose either milk or dark chocolate as the base, and there were many toppings available, including nuts, Reese's Pieces, pretzels, white chocolate chips, marshmallows, crumbled Oreos, and more. After mixing everything together, you placed your creation in a white box, and markers were provided for decorating your box.

It was a fantastic way to take a breather, unwind, and create a delicious treat. Thanks once again to the Good Vibes Team and to Yvonne Perry for her brilliant idea and her time! 😋🥨🍯🥄
