It’s National Fentanyl Awareness Day!

⚠️ Fentanyl awareness is more important than ever. ⚠️
It is often found in unexpected places and cannot be detected by sight, smell, or taste. This , take steps to protect yourself and others:
✅ Learn about the signs of an emergency and how to respond.
✅ Only use medications obtained from a verified pharmacy.
✅ Talk openly with your community about the risks of illicit substances.
✅ Connect with your local Comprehensive Harm Reduction program for Fentanyl test strips and education.
Let’s work together to keep our community safe. 💜

We want to give a huge shout out to Mary Thompson, ARE Medical Case Manager. Mary won the Virginia Department of Health annual Case Manager of the year award! She is so deserving of this award and we are very lucky to have her here at ARE. if you see Mary, please give her a high five or hug and tell her congratulations!

Quotes from Mary's nomination: Since starting at ARE, Mary has proven to be innovative and creative in assisting her clients with their needs, often thinking outside the box in an area with limited resources. Her clients describe her as honest and compassionate and appreciate her direct style when having a conversation while establishing a comfortable safe space for them to discuss private issues. Mary’s clients ADORE her! There’s really no other accurate way to say it. Most of our clients go to our reception area to let us know they are in the building, not Mary’s clients.... they go straight to her office, smiles on their faces, and waving as they pass my office. That alone says so much about her relationship with her clients. Mary makes her clients feel seen, heard, and know that they are cared for.... Anything less is unacceptable. Mary addresses case management from a whole person approach, and you can see the positive impact it has on her clients. They trust her, explicitly. On a daily basis, she goes above and beyond to make sure that she is doing everything within her power to remove barriers for her clients and make their lives a little easier and more enjoyable.... despite, budget cuts and restraints, strained political climates, raising costs, etc.

Quote from a client: "Mary is more than my case manager, she has helped me when I had a situation with my meds and / or when I had needed dental work done. I don't know how she does it but when I had an issue she made it possible to get whatever problem fixed. I feel truly honored and blessed to have Mary as my case manager because without her, I don't know what I'd do."

ARE staff had the awesome opportunity to check out The Typewriter Studio today for our monthly staff teambuilder. Jill was an amazing host, leading us through a canvas bag printmaking class. It is always great to have some time together to bond and this class was fun and relaxing, just what we needed!

April 18 is National Transgender HIV Testing Day ( ). Today, we recognize the disproportionate impact of HIV on transgender communities and the structural barriers that continue to limit access to prevention, testing, and care.

In 2021, a CDC Special Report found that transgender women accounted for 89% of new HIV diagnoses among transgender individuals and persons with additional gender identities (AGI). Transgender people of color are particularly impacted by HIV. In 2021, Black and Hispanic/Latina transgender women represented 78% of transgender women newly diagnosed with HIV, and Black and Hispanic/Latino Transgender men represented 57% of transgender men newly diagnosed with HIV.

According to data from the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program, in 2022, 73% of transgender women and 64% of transgender men living with HIV lived below the federal poverty level. Transgender individuals living with HIV also reported higher rates of homelessness or unstable housing than cis-men or cis-women living with HIV in 2021.

What you should be tested for and how often can depend on several factors, including where you live and your age, s*xual history, current s*xual practices, and symptoms (if you have any). A healthcare provider can help you decide which tests you need. Here are some general guidelines:

-Everyone ages 13 to 64 years should be tested at least once for HIV.

-Most s*xually active adults should be tested for syphilis based on where they live.

-Pregnant women should be tested for syphilis, HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C starting early in pregnancy. Some people may need repeat testing and also need to be tested for chlamydia and gonorrhea.

-All s*xually active women younger than 25 years should be tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia every year.

-Some women 25 years and older should be tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia every year. This can include women who have new partners, multiple partners, or a partner who has an STI.

-Sexually active men who are gay or bis*xual and men who have s*x with men should be tested: For syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea at least once a year. Those with multiple or anonymous partners should be tested more frequently (e.g., every 3 to 6 months). For HIV at least once a year and may benefit from more frequent HIV testing (e.g., every 3 to 6 months).

-Anyone who shares injection drug equipment should get tested for HIV at least once a year.

-People who have had oral or a**l s*x should talk with their healthcare provider about throat and re**al testing options.
