Same District, Different Outcomes.
Check out this research study summary.

Fifteen pairs of students with extensive support needs, from the same district, were matched across twelve characteristics, including disability, age, and skill level in communication, literacy, and numeracy. In each pair of students, one student’s IEP team had made the decision that the student should be included in general education for 80% or more of their day at their first and subsequent IEPs; the other student’s IEP team had made the decision that the student should be separated into a special education classroom either at a general education school or a separate school. Researchers conducted observations and compared outcome data from the students’ first and most current IEPs. They found dramatic differences based on placement.

Students in separate classrooms were less likely to be engaged and less likely to be interacting with one another and their typical peers. They made limited, if any, progress in communication, literacy, and math. Students in general education settings had significantly higher social and peer-to-peer interactions and made significantly greater progress in communication, literacy, and math.

Great list of characteristics for sensory kiddos as well as ADHD - a lot of similarities. Great to use for teachers, coaches, family, friends.

Do these look familiar for your sensory kiddo?

At what point will DYSCALCULIA count as much as dyslexia? Do you realize how often mental math is required in the middle of daily life where there is NO opportunity to use a calculator? Do you realize the amount of stress people are under in a public setting where automatic recall of math facts are expected for daily life? Do you realize how impatient , unforgiving and condescending society can be if your internal math skills are not up to speed ?

Do you know how many mistakes are made in a given day with math struggles? Pharmacy, driving, money, cooking, recipes, estimating time, distance, sports, games, finances, banking, planning an event, ordering from the Internet, gardening, restaurants, tips, bill paying, temperature, measurement, calendars, medications directions, walking directions, use of GPS, counting change, analog clocks, public transportation schedules, measuring cups, cooking classes, sewing, crafts, bike riding , scoring sports, scoring in games, miles per hour, drivers education rules, being late, getting lost in buildings, getting lost while shopping, getting lost while traveling, being late, needing extra time to find places, being last in a sport, being last in line , no one wanting to be your class partner, finding the page in a book, playing math games, doing math fast enough at a shopping event, knowing what the sale price is , calculating interest or percent, using a calculator for basic stuff , taking the wrong amount of medicine, setting the oven , taking a college class, reading recipes., getting suddenly lost when driving, feeling exhausted , being the late person , understanding temperature:fractions: decimals , not being able to take science because your math sucks , not going fast enough on a math test to score well, having a teacher take away your calculator, feeling dumb, quitting a social activity because it requires math, getting ripped off with money, not figuring math for a legal document, doing taxes, not keeping score in a game, messing up the time in an airline flight, transposing numbers, miscounting numbers, counting on your fingers, not being able to estimate quantity, ordering a volume of deli food, judging math for house projects, using math for art or projects, sewing skills, gardening, architecture, science, electrical work, car mechanics, plumbing exam, numbers needed for history class , Roman numerals, dates on a calendar and navigating daily life with ease. Deciding not to participate in an activity because you can't keep up with the math required. Not purchasing enough of an item as the math is too challenging. Lost money due to lack of rapid math calculations. Not being able to do the math for hobbies like photography or music. Math is everywhere. Not getting a job due to math speed. Math is everywhere. People annoyed with you.

Math is everywhere.

DyscalculiaCounts as much as dyslexia but they have a stronger voice.

Realizing your dyscalculia is far worse than your dyslexia for everyday life.

Not measuring up.

Not being able to pronounce the word .

Math is needed for many hands-on jobs like electrician, plumber, carpenter, florist, hairdresser, chef, health care , art work, dental tech, mechanic, baker, waitress etc.

Dyscalculia is as important as dyslexia and should not be overlooked.

P.S. Memorizing math facts has not worked despite trying many methods. It’s brutal. We can forget all we memorized during real life, stress events that require β€œ fast math” thinking.
