Friday is School Nutrition Hero Day, but we are celebrating Georgia school nutrition heroes all week long! Today's featured hero is Apalachee High School Nutrition Manager Debbie Greeson. This highlight was submitted by GaDOE Culinary Specialist John Huff.

Following the tragedy at the school in 2024, Debbie demonstrated extraordinary compassion and leadership. As students prepared to return, she anticipated that many might not have funds in their lunch accounts and took action to ensure they would still be cared for. She reached out to her community to help build an “angel lunch money” fund to support any student in need during that difficult time.

She shared the following message:

“I’m the nutrition manager at Apalachee High School. I’m seeing all these fundraiser posts for the families and victims, which are all great causes, and I keep thinking of the students here that have been through so much. We are in great anticipation of their return on Tuesday. It makes me sad that some may return with no money in their lunch accounts. I always do my best to do what I can to feed those students, but with all they’ve been through already, it will be hard to just offer them an alternative meal (as there is no charging in high schools). So with that said, if you feel it in your heart to give… You can give a donation towards our ‘angel money,’ which would help cover any child who does not have money to eat—at least until things feel halfway normal again.”

Thank you, Debbie, for !

🍓 Today, every school in Barrow County received local strawberries from Sonrise Farms in Dublin, GA! 🍓

What a perfect example of farm-to-table in our schools—bringing fresh, locally grown produce straight to our students. These sweet and delicious strawberries will be offered tomorrow at lunch as a fresh fruit option for students to enjoy.

We’re proud to support local farmers while serving healthy, tasty choices in Barrow County Schools! ❤️🍓
