It’s as simple as it sounds! Brushing your teeth with braces is incredibly important, but we know it has its challenges. Having an appliance in your mouth creates many areas for plaque and bacteria to hide and build up. It’s Dr. Tringas’ and Dr. Schuyler’s job to make your teeth straighter but its YOUR job to keep them clean and healthy. The last thing we want to see and have you find when we take your braces off is a beautiful straight smile with permanent damage from not brushing properly while you were in treatment. Not brushing properly and removing the plaque from your teeth can cause permanent stains, cavities, bad breath and gum disease(even when you aren’t in treatment) Don’t let this happen to you!
1. Always brush your teeth at least twice a day. There are 1440 minutes in a day and your teeth only need 4 of them!! If possible, we recommend brushing after.
2. Use the tools that we give you. Our Orthodontic team will give you several tips, tricks, and supplies to use in order to make brushing and flossing easier while you wear braces.
3. Bring along a travel toothbrush wherever you go, so there’s no excuse not to brush – even at school.
4. Replace your toothbrush every three months. This will guarantee that the bristles are still in good shape for proper cleaning.
5. Flossing is even more important than ever. It’s not as easy to brush your teeth as it used to be, but it’s just as important – if not more.
6. When brushing is not an option, use a fluoride-based mouthwash. Bring a small travel sized bottle with you just in case. Having what you need readily available in your backpack, car, or purse is the key to success.
