Over the past year, we’ve welcomed a lot of new faces to Yoyogi — so we wanted to share where the name actually came from! 🌱
In 2018, Josh, co-owner of Yoyogi, traveled to Tokyo while balancing a full-time job, graduate school, and yoga teacher training — and needed a reset. ✈️
After landing, he searched for a yoga studio, hopped on the subway, and completely out of chance got off at a stop called “Yoyogi.” The name immediately stood out — enough that he stopped and snapped this photo in the moment.
On the walk to class, he looked it up and learned that “Yoyogi” loosely translates to “generations of trees” 🌳
That idea stuck.
Not just because of the natural connection to “yogi,” but because of what it represents — growth over time, connection across generations, to each other, and being part of something bigger than yourself.
Over the rest of the trip, he came to really appreciate the neighborhood, the park, and everything the name represented.
So where did “Yoyogi” come from? It came from a real place, a real moment, and a meaning we’re proud to carry forward. ❤️
