🍀 Happy St. Patrick's Day from GSMT! 🍀

Today, one of our amazing music therapists, Spencer Cole, MT-BC, is sharing some fun and functional Irish (Gaeilge) vocabulary that can be used in music therapy sessions or music lessons! 🇮🇪🎶

Stay tuned to learn words like:
🎵 Music
🎤 Sing
👏 Clap
🥁 Instruments
💃 Dance

Incorporating language into music experiences is a great way to support learning, engagement, and cultural connection. These words can be especially meaningful for those with Irish cultural connections or anyone interested in celebrating the holiday in a thoughtful and interactive way.

We love finding creative ways to celebrate culture through music! Follow along and try these words in your next music experience! Have a safe and music filled St. Patrick's Day!

🍀Hello GSMT Family! Happy Music Therapy Monday and early Happy St. Patrick's Day! 🍀

Today we’re spotlighting one of our amazing music therapists, Spencer Cole, MT-BC, who is sharing a fun and engaging music activity using the traditional Irish song “Ciorcal, Cearnóg, Triantán.” This playful song invites participants to sing, move, and learn while practicing Irish vocabulary for shapes, colors, and body parts.

🎶 English Translation:
Circle, square, triangle
Yellow banana and white milk
Eyes, ears, mouth, head
I have two hands and just one nose!

🇮🇪 Lyrics in Irish:
Ciorcal, cearnóg, triantán
Banana buí agus bainne bán
Súile, cluasa, béal, ceann
Dhá láimh agus srón amháin!

In music therapy, songs like this are a great way to celebrate culture and holidays while also supporting therapeutic goals. Singing and moving along can help address skills such as:

🎵 Gross and fine motor movement
🎵 Vocalization and speech practice
🎵 Following directions
🎵 Body awareness
🎵 Group participation and social engagement
🎵 Cognitive skills

Music therapy creates opportunities to learn, connect, and celebrate together, all while working toward meaningful goals.

🌸 Hello GSMT Family! Happy Music Therapy Monday!

This week we’re celebrating the contributions of women in the field of music therapy in recognition of International Women's Day (yesterday).

Women have played an essential role in shaping music therapy through clinical practice, research, advocacy, and education. Today, music therapists support individuals across the lifespan in hospitals, schools, mental health settings, rehabilitation programs, and community organizations, helping people use music to reach meaningful therapeutic goals.

One influential leader in the field is Barbara Wheeler. Dr. Wheeler is a music therapist, educator, and researcher whose books and publications have helped shape music therapy education and clinical practice around the world. Her work was also one of my first introductions to the field when I began researching music therapy, and it helped open the door to understanding the importance and possibilities of this profession.

Music therapy can also offer meaningful support for women of all ages and backgrounds. Through structured musical experiences such as songwriting, lyric analysis, improvisation, movement, and group music-making, participants can explore identity, reflect on personal experiences, and practice expressing emotions in a supportive environment. Music therapy can support emotional regulation, stress management, confidence-building, and communication skills. In group settings, shared musical experiences can also foster connection and reduce isolation, creating space for individuals to support and learn from one another.

At GSMT, we are grateful for the women who make up our community. From the clinicians who bring expertise, compassion, and creativity to every session, to the individuals and families we serve who inspire growth, resilience, and joy, women play a vital role in shaping the work we do every day. Their leadership, collaboration, and dedication help drive innovation, foster community, and create a supportive space where music can transform lives.

Who is a woman in your life who inspires you?

🌟 Hello GSMT Family! 🌟

We’re thrilled to bring back Music Therapy Mondays! For our first post of the month, we’re celebrating growth as we look ahead to spring, hoping the snow starts to melt, the sun begins to shine, and new possibilities emerge.

In music therapy, growth can take many forms, no matter age, abilities, or diagnoses. Whether working with children, teens, adults, or older adults, music therapy provides a safe, supportive, and creative space to explore change, practice new skills, and connect with others.

🎵 Growth can happen through:
- Communication & self-expression
- Emotional regulation
- Cognitive skills like attention, memory, and sequencing
- Social connection & turn-taking
- Motor coordination & movement

🎵 Growth might look like:
- Initiating a conversation
- Trying a new coping strategy
- Taking a solo during group music-making
- Maintaining eye contact
- Using rhythm to regulate breathing
- Expressing a feeling safely
- Recalling a meaningful memory
- Completing a song from memory
- Participating with confidence
- Keeping a steady beat with others

No matter how big or small it feels, every step forward matters. Music therapy meets each person exactly where they are, helping them build confidence, independence, and joy.

As we move into this season of renewal, we invite you to reflect: What does growth look like for you right now? Where might music help you stretch, explore, or reconnect this spring?

Our hearts are with the individuals, families, clinicians, students, and community members who are feeling fear, uncertainty, or pain right now.

We stand with the New England Region of the American Music Therapy Association and support their recent statement condemning the harm being caused by current ICE enforcement actions. We believe it’s important to say clearly: no one should have to live in fear of being detained, separated from loved ones, or harmed simply for existing in their community.

At GSMT, we work with people across many walks of life. We see how deeply fear and instability affect mental health, sense of safety, and connection, not just locally, but far beyond our immediate communities. These impacts ripple outward, touching families, care providers, educators, and neighbors everywhere.

We want our clients, colleagues, and community members to know that you are not alone. We stand alongside those who are directly impacted, as well as those who are holding space, supporting loved ones, and carrying this weight quietly.

As NER-AMTA shared, “As helping professionals, we have an ethical responsibility to name this harm and to offer support, advocacy, and resources wherever possible.” We hold that responsibility close and remain committed to care, compassion, and dignity for all.

Local resources and support can be found through NER-AMTA’s regional resource guide here: https://www.musictherapynewengland.org/resources-2/

With care and solidarity,

✨ December is here, and we’re kicking off a month-long celebration of holidays, traditions, and gratitude! ✨

GSMT’s newest blog, written by Kelly Weaver MT-BC, reminds us how meaningful it can be to carry gratitude with us all year long, especially during a season filled with celebrations, busy schedules, and big emotions. It’s the perfect read as we head into December’s many cultural, spiritual, and just-for-fun holidays.

This month at GSMT, we’re leaning into gratitude, not the forced kind, but the grounded, honest kind that helps us slow down and check in with ourselves.

✨ Notice what’s helping. Even the smallest supportive moments count.
✨ Make space for all emotions. We can be joyful and tired, hopeful and messy, grateful and overwhelmed.
✨ Celebrate the small wins. Honor the tiny steps that carried you forward this year.
✨ Pause and breathe. Take a moment to notice your body and what you need right now.
✨ Honor your journey. Growth often comes from the challenging moments too.

If you missed this month’s newsletter focused on gratitude and taking the time to check in with ourselves, be sure to sign up before December to get the next issue in your inbox!!

Some of our GSMT team members recharge by getting out, getting active, and enjoying the fresh air…and these two are our resident runners who took to the trail this past week to catch up. 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

So many members of our team love hiking, running, and spending time outdoors. Movement, fresh air, nature, and music in our earbuds can be so regulating and restorative this time of year. 🍂✨

This November, we are doing a gentle “check-in” together. Noticing what helps us feel grounded, supported, and connected. For some, that is time in the woods. For others, it may be a quiet moment, a warm mug, a favorite song, or laughing with someone we care about.

We encourage our GSMT families to get outside when you can and soak up the beauty around us this season. Notice what feels nourishing to you, even if it is small. 💛 Every little moment counts.

Our 7 Spooktacular Sessions for October are rolling right along, and this one’s a Halloween hit! 🚌🎃

All aboard the spooky bus! This interactive story song keeps little ones engaged as they remove and replace images on the bus and dance and sing along while the story unfolds, practicing sequencing, attention, and participation along the way. This activity brings The Spooky Wheels on the Bus by J. Elizabeth Mills to life! You can read the book or sing the words using the familiar Wheels on the Bus melody.

The interactive picture board, created by Mindy Stenger and available as a free resource on Teachers Pay Teachers, is a perfect companion. Simply print the bus and picture cards on heavy cardstock, laminate, and Velcro them to the bus. As the story goes on, students pull off each matching picture, then put them all back in order at the end, a fun and festive Halloween circle-time favorite! 👻🧡
