🚫 Public Safety Reminder: Wildfire Area Alert 🚫

For your safety and the safety of others:

Do NOT park on the side of the road to take photos or videos of the wildfire. This creates dangerous traffic hazards and can block emergency vehicles.

Do NOT fly drones near the fire. Emergency aircraft are actively working in the area, and drones can ground critical air operations.

Avoid the area near the fire, unless you are under evacuation or emergency instructions. Unnecessary traffic puts lives at risk.

Reminder: The Navajo Nation is under Stage 1 Fire Restrictions. This includes:
- No open fires or campfires (except in developed recreation areas)
- No fireworks
- Smoking only in enclosed vehicles or designated areas.

Let’s work together to protect our land, our people, and our first responders.

Starting today, and through the weekend it is going to be hot in the Gallup area. This Saturday and Sunday we are looking at temperatures between 93 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

Please be safe if you are outside and as a reminder we wanted to share with you the signs between heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

UPDATE: Navajo Code Talker content restored to U.S. Department of Defense websites

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - The 25th Navajo Nation Council condemned the removal of content honoring the Navajo Code Talkers from U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) websites, particularly given the Code Talkers' pivotal role in World War II. Their use of the Navajo language to create an unbreakable code was essential in securing key military victories, including at Iwo Jima.

The Pentagon acknowledged the removal as a “mistake” and has since restored much of the deleted content. The DoD explained that the removal was part of an automated process to comply with the DEI policy directive. While some pages have been restored, others remain offline, replaced by server errors. The Pentagon has promised to resolve the issue fully.

The Navajo Nation has long advocated for the recognition of the Code Talkers’ legacy, which was formally honored by Congress in 2000 with Congressional Gold Medals for the original 29 Code Talkers. The Navajo Nation Council stressed that the removal of these materials disrespects the Code Talkers’ contributions and the unique relationship between the Navajo Nation and the U.S. government. They remain committed to ensuring the Code Talkers’ legacy is recognized, independent of any political agenda.

"The restoration of the Navajo Code Talkers' articles is a necessary step, but it does not erase the harm caused by their initial removal. The service of the Code Talkers was crucial to the success of World War II, and their legacy must be continually recognized and honored, beyond any political agenda,” said Speaker Crystalyne Curley.
