Happy ! Today’s tip deals with small pens of livestock. I work with a lot of clients that have 2-3 cattle in a pen, and they often have a problem with one steer being much bigger than the other two. One will always be the boss, so try to get them to eat separately. Put up panels to create feed stalls, then put feed in each stall. This will help keep them separated and eating the proper amounts.

for December 27 - always check the calcium:phosphorus ratio on your feed tags. For cattle, sheep, and goat diets, a 2:1 calcium:phosphorus ratio is very important to avoid urinary calculi issues. That is not the only step to take, especially for sheep and goats, but it is the most jmportant.

Happy ! This week’s tip is to check the protein and energy levels of your later feed in the winter. Your hens will have an easier time with molting if they have a little extra in their diets. It takes a lot of energy to replace all of their feathers and recover their bodies from 6-9 months of laying an egg every day. Some feeds (like the NNS Poultry Layer!) have higher energy and protein levels already, so you may not need to add anything. Many don’t, though, so it’s worth considering adding a little something extra.

Happy ! Today’s tip is to check the ingredients on the label for any feed you purchase. They will be listed underneath the nutrient analysis in descending order of inclusion rate. In other words, there is more of the first ingredient than the last. Some items will be vague (e.g. “plant protein products”), but mineral products should be explicitly stated. Sheep feed, for example, should have ammonium sulfate or ammonium chloride to avoid water belly. If it’s not listed, you should look for a different feed. Ingredients matter!

It’s ! Today’s tip is to slow down when introducing grain to your cattle (or sheep, or goats!). Did you know that some studies have shown that the rumen is still developing a population of microbes to digest starch and lactic acid for about 7 weeks after introducing grain to the diet? Why be in a hurry? Cattle have a remarkable ability to handle most anything in their diet if you give them time to adapt. Slowing down your grain introduction and step-up periods will lead to healthier animals, which will lead to more money back into your pocket.

It’s ! Winter range can be tough on your cows. Low quality forage, cold stress, lactation, and pregnancy can all drain a cow’s protein, mineral, and energy reserves. Supplementing cows in some way - good quality hay, cake, lick tubs - will help maintain body condition and improve health outcomes for the cow, the calf, and any bulls that may be on range as well.

Happy Friday! Introducing a new Friday feature - simple tips to help with feeding your livestock. Today’s tip is about feeding horses. If you don’t have access to pasture, smaller meals more often throughout the day can help mimic grazing behavior and keep your horse’s gut healthy.
