On MLK Day, I reflect on this image of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with Coretta Scott King and their daughter Yolanda — a reminder that movements are carried by families, and often by women whose strength is rarely named.

The dream Dr. King spoke of must also include a healthcare system where women are safe during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. For too many Black women, that dream has not yet been realized. Maternal health equity is civil rights work.

As a midwife, nurse, and advocate, I believe we honor Dr. King by transforming care — listening to women, confronting bias, and building systems that protect life with dignity and respect. The dream still lives, and so does the responsibility to make it real.

Thank you Tiffany Vassell, MS, RN for spreading love by donating several copies of your book, Preparation for a Hospital Birth, to Lucinda’s House. This is one of my favorite resources to share with families as they prepare for their birth journeys inside and outside of the hospital. We are so grateful for your generosity and commitment to empowering birthing people with knowledge.

Becoming Midwives: A Mentoring & Support Network for Black and Brown Midwifery Students
This space was created for Black and Brown midwifery students at any stage of their journey to become a midwife.

Our first meeting is January 7th, where I’ll share the vision, purpose, and why this program was created. This will be a space for mentorship, community, guidance, and support as you move through midwifery education together.

If you are interested in joining, please message me for registration information.

“It takes a village.”
When I reflect on 2025, those words truly capture the heart of this year. Lucinda’s House would not have had such a meaningful and successful year without the incredible support of our community. Thank you to everyone who donated, volunteered, helped organize events, and lifted us up with words of encouragement. Your support carried me through even the toughest days and gave me the strength to keep going.
I am deeply grateful to the moms and families who trusted me and allowed me to be part of their pregnancy and postpartum journeys—it is truly an honor.
As we look ahead to 2026, I am excited to continue this work, grounded in community, love, and collective care.
Please continue to support https://lucindashouse.org/donate/

Rest and relaxation are essential for healing, clarity, and sustainability. As we close this year, I’m grounding myself in self-care so I can continue showing up for families and communities in 2026. Lucinda’s House is ready for what’s next. ✨
