New York State Takes Proactive Steps to Ensure Athlete Safety

Governor Kathy Hochul today signed legislation S.7424/A.366A requiring camps and youth sports programs to establish automated external defibrillator, or AED, implementation plans and to have at least one person trained to properly use the AED at camps, games and practice.

Governor Hochul Signs Legislation to Keep Kids Safe from Cardiac Emergencies | Governor Kathy Hochul

See NY Law here: https://lnkd.in/dMMte-qk

In a landmark move, New York State has recently implemented
legislation mandating the presence of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)

in sports camps and practices. This crucial initiative aims to enhance the
safety of athletes and participants engaged in physical activities.

The new regulations underscore the state's commitment to mitigating the risks associated with sudden cardiac events, which can occur
unexpectedly during sports-related activities.

By requiring the availability of AEDs in sports camps and practice facilities, lawmakers are prioritizing the prompt and effective response to cardiac emergencies.

This proactive measure aligns with the broader national effort
to create safer environments for athletes of all ages.
AEDs are user-friendly devices that can significantly improve survival rates in cases of sudden cardiac arrest, making their accessibility in sports settings a vital component of comprehensive emergency preparedness.

Will your AEDs Work?

Are you sure about that?

Fact: With thousands of AED under management, I can tell you with a great deal of certainty, the following
When we take on a new client, up to 40% of their AEDs will fail at the point of rescue because of improper maintenance and management.

Often those same AEDs are being managed by an outside agency. In some cases, EVEN the manufacturer

That is why it is of critical importance that the work completed is verified and documented.

Consider this. We recently took over a new AED maintenance and management account for a public school district in Texas. The client previously had their 64 AEDs managed and maintained by another vendor.

On our initial phone conversation, the district nurse informed us that based on what she was told, her pads and batteries were “good for another year or two”.

When she was asked how that information was “verified” she said the former tech said on his way out the door; “You’re good for another year”.

No documentation.

No proof of work done.

Nada!

The district nurse received what we call the “two thumbs up method” of verification.

No proof. No Verification. No documentation. All those add up to a catastrophe waiting to happen.

The two thumbs up method implies all work have been completed and documented but without verification there is no way for a client to know absolutely what has been performed.

Bottomline. When our Response Ready Techs arrived a few weeks later, it was determined that 45 of the clients’ AEDs would have failed at the point of rescue because the capacity of the batteries was so low, they would not have powered up at point of rescue. Solution. The batteries were all replaced.

IMPORTANT NOTE: the work performed on your AEDs must be documented and verifiable. By verifiable I don’t mean an online platform whereby someone puts in information that may or may not be accurate. Every management company has one of those.

At AED SERVICE AMERICA when we say “verifiable” we mean a summary report that is created in the field when the tech is inspecting the AED and writing down all the parameters of the work completed. That document must then be submitted to our home office for approval before the tech can advance to the next client AED.

Ensuring Lifesaving Protection: The Importance of an AED Service Plan

When it comes to safeguarding lives, an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is a device that stands out as a true lifesaver. These portable, easy-to-use devices are designed to deliver an electric shock to the heart in cases of sudden cardiac arrest, potentially saving a life before professional medical help arrives. However, owning an AED is just the beginning. To ensure its readiness and effectiveness, an AED service plan is paramount.

An AED service plan is a comprehensive program that encompasses maintenance, monitoring, and readiness of the device. It ensures that your AED is in optimal working condition and ready for immediate use during a critical situation. Here's why having an AED service plan is crucial:

1. Reliability: An AED service plan guarantees that your device is reliable. It includes routine inspections, testing, and maintenance to confirm that the AED is functioning correctly. In emergencies, you need an AED that you can depend on without question.

2. Compliance: Many regions and organizations require AEDs to be properly maintained and regularly serviced to meet legal requirements and compliance standards. Neglecting this can result in legal repercussions and liability issues.

3. Prolonged Lifespan: An AED is an investment in safety, and a service plan can help extend its lifespan. Regular maintenance and servicing can prevent wear and tear, ensuring your device lasts for years.

4. Immediate Readiness: In a cardiac emergency, every second counts. An AED service plan ensures your device is always ready to use, with updated software and fully charged batteries. You can't afford to have your AED malfunction when it's needed most.

5. Peace of Mind: Knowing that your AED is well-maintained and in compliance with regulations brings peace of mind. You'll be better prepared to handle a cardiac arrest situation, whether at home, in the workplace, or a public space.

An AED service plan typically includes several components:

1. Regular Inspections: This involves visual and physical checks to ensure the AED is free from physical damage and that all components are in working order.

2. Electrode Pad and Battery Replacement: The AED service plan will outline when to replace the electrode pads and batteries, typically based on their expiration date.

3. Software Updates: AEDs have software that may require updates to ensure optimal performance. The service plan will include a schedule for keeping the software current.

4. Post-Incident Analysis: In the event that the AED is used, a post-incident analysis should be part of the plan to evaluate its performance and identify any areas for improvement.

5. Training: An essential part of the service plan is ensuring that designated individuals are trained to use the AED effectively. Regular training and refresher courses should be included.

In conclusion, an AED service plan is not an optional component when you own an AED; it is a necessity. It is a comprehensive strategy to keep your AED ready, reliable, and compliant with regulations. The benefits are clear: it can save lives, prevent legal issues, prolong the device's lifespan, and provide peace of mind. When it comes to cardiac emergencies, preparation and reliability are key, and an AED service plan ensures you have both. Make the responsible choice today by implementing a well-structured AED service plan for your safety and the safety of those around you.

AED SERVICE AMERICA “Working Smart” Program

Tomorrow evening October 31st, 2023, we will be discussing AED Reliability and AED Ease of Use features.

Think of an AED as a computer. A lifesaving computer. While we have come to depend on technology the simple fact is that technology can fail.

Self-Testing:

With an AED, it is imperative that a manufacturer reduce the possibility of failure. To reduce the likelihood of failure, manufacturers build their AEDs to do a certain self-test to evaluate the critical components of the device. Typically, these tests are performed automatically without human intervention while the AED is in standby mode.

In this session we will discuss: Self-testing features specific to Philips, Zoll and Cardiac Science AEDs

a. What components are being tested?
b. How often are the tests conducted?
c. How robust are the self-tests being performed.

Ease of Use Features

While all AEDs are easy to use, each brand has their own features they feel are beneficial. We will discuss the AED features and benefits once again of Philips, Zoll and Cardiac Science AEDs.

STC is excited to announce that the College of Medicine, of Central Michigan University, is offering a program to install additional AED units in our buildings in partnership with the Fordney Club. The existing AED units provide us with peace of mind, and adding a few more will only increase our resources during a medical emergency. We would like to express our gratitude to Steve Vance, MD of the College of Medicine at Central Michigan University, and his associate Arnav Sharma for taking the time to meet with Superintendent Mark Benson and Athletic Director Ashley Schlager. We would also like to thank the Fordney Club for their generous partnership to provide AED units to districts across the county. An AED, or automated external defibrillator, is used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. It's a sophisticated yet easy-to-use medical device that can analyze the heart's rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock or defibrillation to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm.

At AED SERVICE AMERICA, We manage and maintain small as well as large scale AED deployments across America.

Everyday we visit college campuses, banks, corporate HQ’s, airports, hospitals, high schools, municipalities, police and fire as well as many other vertical markets.

They all have one thing in common when we take them on as an aed maintenance and management client

The common theme is this.

100% of all our new clients had at least one AED out of service, that would not work at point of rescue.

Think about that.

100% of all NEW clients we visit for the first time had at least one AED out of service in their deployment and they aren’t even aware of it.

The Louisville AED Study identified that nearly 1 in 5 AEDs will fail at point of rescue because of improper management.

Sometimes the fix is easy. The AED in the image below simply needs to be turned around in the cabinet and the wall mounted storage plastic window needs replacement.

More often than not, pads are well past the expiration and batteries are dead.

Not only does this represent the potential for loss of life but it also poses issues of negligence and the ensuing liability.

That’s exactly why at AED SERVICE AMERICA, AED maintenance and management is OUR ONLY BUSINESS!

If you would like to discuss how AED SERVICE AMERICA can help you become A RESPONSE READY deployment to protect those you serve please message me.
