One of the aspects of my job that has been the unexpected best has been the wonderful people I have been able to help. I believe I can honestly say that I have liked all my clients! I feel so lucky! Some have become friends whom I have a meal or hang out with. Others not so much. But helping people to get Title XIX benefits has been rewarding in many ways. I’m glad I can do it.

I was able to give a daughter an IRA.
A friend of a friend had gotten his mother on Medicaid without professional assistance. I saw the home was for sale and I knew a family member had been living with the mother for several years. It turned out that no one at DSS had told them that a caregiver sharing a home and keeping a loved one out of the nursing home was entitled to at least the value of the home property. Once I helped him, the State allowed the funds from the home property sale to be transferred to that caregiver and a woman who cared for her mother had money to set up her first retirement account.

I got the nicest compliment from one of the DSS workers. She said she was glad that I would be working with this woman because I am a strong advocate for my clients. How observant is that! She might have moved up to being the smartest person at DSS (in an entirely biased poll run by me)!

There is good news from DSS. Although not so good for the deficit. The government had planned to lower by half the amount at which you could be eligible--for QMB from about $2150 monthly gross income down to half that or about $1125. This program pays your Medicare B premium and the co-pays for any Medicare covered service. It was a blessing to many people who lacked the funds to pay their 20% of every medical appointment covered by Medicare. Hopefully, the economy's improvement will raise all boats and the State budget will improve. If you do not get the benefits of the QMB program, I can tell you more about it.
