René Nolda has arthritis, which has led to knee, back and hip pain. As someone who enjoys crafts, sewing and spending time with her grandchildren, pain was beginning to take over her life.

Before knee replacement surgery, René turned to Physical Therapist Sarah Freund at our Lake St. Louis center for prehabilitation. René needed to get stronger in order to have the surgery.

Once prehab and her knee replacement were complete, René returned to work with Sarah to improve her strength and mobility.

In the beginning, it was tough for René to get around. Slowly, she regained her strength thanks to Sarah's guidance. After surgery and physical therapy, René now has more strength and stamina.

"Sarah gets the glory for me being where I am today," said René. "She has a way of getting you motivated through therapy. I never felt like I couldn't do something."

From needing to use a cane or walker to now walking on her own, René still has some work to do. But she's back on her feet, enjoying life again.

"I feel amazing," she said. "I am just excited to move through life without so much pain."

No one wants to hear the words, "you have cancer."

Tracy Fronko was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2024 and was quickly facing a world of fear and uncertainty. She had to schedule appointments, learn about different doctors, attend consultations and plan for treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, medications and physical therapy. All of this became her new, overwhelming reality. On top of that, she also had to deal with the side effects of these treatments.

Tracy’s side effects led her to see Megan Storm, ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation Program Director and a physical therapist. Tracy had first heard Megan speak at a Project 31 meeting, a breast cancer support group, at Mercy on Memorial. Megan explained how cancer treatments can worsen pelvic floor issues.

“So, I called and got a referral from my surgeon,” she shared. “Made my appointment.”

Megan worked with Tracy to help her return to the activities she loved, while making sure she felt respected and supported. At 63, Tracy had finished half and full marathons, completed triathlons and enjoyed adventures like parasailing, biking and skiing. She wanted to keep living an active life, including helping her neighbors by pulling weeds and walking their dogs. Megan designed a program for Tracy focused on building core and hip strength.

“I love trying any new adventure I can," she stated. “However, my pelvic floor issues limited my ability.”

Thankfully, the plan not only met but exceeded Tracy’s expectations. Being able to do jumping jacks again was a big moment for her. She continues to celebrate small victories and works on her exercises every day. She states she’s feeling great and is looking forward to getting back to everything.

Keith Vogt is a monster truck enthusiast and has been actively involved with them for 35 years. A freak accident occurred in January 2025, when he fell at an event, landing on his shoulder, tearing his rotator cuff off the bone. He feared this would keep him on the sidelines for upwards of six months.

In February, he had surgery to reattach his rotator cuff and bicep. Two weeks post-surgery, Keith found himself at our Troy center, nervous, knowing the recovery and healing process would take months.

At first, he couldn’t move his arm. Keith was in intense pain and guarded when it came to anyone touching or moving it, but in order to recover, he knew he had to let his guard down. He started with simple passible movements to get his arm and shoulder moving again. Once he started, Keith didn't slow down. Soon, he was reaching for the top of the finger ladder on the wall, using a fork and knife with his right hand, putting on his socks and shoes and then tying his shoes.

"After four months of physical therapy, not six, I was given a full release to go back to doing what I love to do," Keith shared. "At the beginning of July, I was able to return to Monster Jam as the lead safety inspector at the World Finals in Salt Lake City, Utah."

While a lot of his recovery was physical, Keith also remarked how the Troy staff helped him through his mom's hospitalization and passing while he was going through physical therapy as well. Through support and allowing him to vent, he was able to keep going.

"I am forever grateful for all they've done for me," Keith said. "They are the true rock stars in my recovery."

Harold Rosen enjoys watching football, investing in the stock market and playing with his dog, Ruby. Unfortunately, the flu hit hard last Christmas. It led to respiratory issues that landed him in and out of the hospital. Eventually, he lost strength, especially in his legs and back. He couldn't stand or walk and needed a mechanical lift to get into bed. And he certainly couldn't walk Ruby.

That's when he came to SSM Health Physical Therapy's St. Peter's center to work with Physical Therapists Michelle Byrd and Madeline Devereux. Harold worked hard and made progress. He recently took his first steps since being hospitalized.

"Michelle and Madeline have inspired me to push harder to reach my goals," he said. "I'm feeling better and stronger. [I'm] looking forward to being able to go out for walks with my dog."
