Did you know that less than 5% of housing stock supports someone with a moderate physical impairment but yet 90% of us plan to remain in our homes? An impairment could happen to anyone in your household even a temporarily with a broken ankle or planned joint replacement. I appreciate the opportunity to share my occupational therapy and home safety expertise tomorrow at the Wheaton Park District. Please come join us at 10 am.

As we age, our homes may need modifications to ensure they continue to meet our changing needs. This program, presented by Julie Lockard from Just Right at Home, will provide practical advice for those wishing to make their homes a safer place to live. You’ll learn practical tips and solutions on how to adapt your home to meet your current needs. Julie will also provide information about her home safety assessment services. Fun day at 38th Annual Scottish Festival & Highland Games representing Rotary Club of Wheaton A.M. What a joy to meet Rotary International president Gordon McInally and his lovely wife Heather. Jeff was able to trace back his Scottish roots, sample some tasty Scotch, lots of kilts, bagpipes, all things Scottish, Highland Games and hang out with the Chicagoland MG Club.

Travel is extra stressful for passengers and their loved ones with limited mobility, energy or who may have navigational difficulties and may need to rely on the availability of airport staff. I salute American Airlines, Envoy Air and Whill for their collaboration on a pilot program to help transport passengers. The autonomous wheelchairs are programmed to tranport passengers and their carryons to their gate while maneuvering around obstacles and other travellers. I was able to see them in action this week at Miami International. A great step in their right direction to improve quality of life for all.

Happy OT month! I had 3 clients in 2 days request assistance with strategies to make it easier to put on shirts. The vast majority of my clients have progressive neurological diagnoses with fine motor difficulties, tremors or numbness. I recently found these awesome clothes with magnetic fasteners. Back in the day "old days" we used to remove buttons and sew on them on the button holes and put Velcro on the lapels among many other tricks. Magna Ready - Stress Free Shirting make men's and women's shirts, pants, jackets, and dresses. I bought one for Dad and he loved it so much he bought himself 7 more shirts.
