The seventh annual Mile of Lights Fun Run/Walk, hosted in December by Winfield Recreation Commission and William Newton Hospital, announced its highest-grossing year, raising $3,160.50 for the Winfield Isle of Lights.

Though fewer participants turned out due to the frigid temperatures, 985 registered. The event continues to set the mark for the largest event either organization has hosted.

Each year, event organizers donate a portion of the proceeds back to the Winfield Isle of Lights to support the annual Christmas light display tradition.

Held the second Sunday in December, this year's Mile of Lights is slated for December 13.

This month's was highlighted by a visit from Becky Reid, the ever-popular smoothie bike, unique but nutritious snacks, and unseasonably beautiful temperatures.

Becky, a Family & Consumer Sciences Extension Agent with K-State Extension - Cowley County, kicked things off with an overview of affordable local health programs available through the extension office, including diabetes education, strength training, and healthy eating styles. She emphasized three keys to wellness: building a supportive healthcare team, knowing your personal health numbers, and staying intentional with activity through initiatives like Walk Kansas. Becky then led the group through some Olympics-inspired stretches to get the blood flowing before heading off on a walk past the extension office and around Memorial Park.
Following the walk, participants enjoyed locally-made freeze-dried tomatoes, bell peppers, and white sweet potatoes along with chips and homemade salsa. Plus, one lucky winner went home with a free Walk Kansas registration, and one took home $20 in Chamber Checks, provided by the Winfield Area Chamber of Commerce.

We'll see you back at the chamber office on March 5 at 4pm for a visit with Kelle Thompson, RPh, sponsored by Oasis Coffee Shop.

Our Story

William Newton Hospital has a proud heritage of excellence in patient care beginning in 1927. Although WNH provides the latest in technology to assist the physician in diagnosis and treatment, our strength also lies in the personalized, compassionate patient care that is often not found in a large medical center. WNH is classified as a Critical Access, not-for-profit community general hospital licensed for 25 acute care and swing beds. In addition to acute care, the hospital provides same-day surgery, skilled swing beds, home healthcare, audiology, cardiac rehabilitation, wound care, rheumotology and many other diagnostic and therapeutic services. An infusion therapy program scheduled for 2014. The hospital operates five rural health clinics in Cowley, Elk and Chautauqua counties and an occupational health program to assist local business and industry. WNH has also developed cooperative arrangements with other providers for cancer treatment and renal dialysis.
