🎃💙 Wingate University Doctor of Physical Therapy Program: Serving Our Community 💙🎃

Happy Halloween, everyone! 👻

This year, Halloween and the end of National Physical Therapy Month fall on a Friday — and if you’re part of the Wingate University Doctor of Physical Therapy program, you know what that means… it’s Rock Steady Boxing Day on campus! 🥊

As we wrap up our celebration of National Physical Therapy Month, we’re proud to highlight Rock Steady Boxing (RSB) — a nonprofit organization that empowers individuals with Parkinson’s Disease through community-based boxing-inspired exercise.

RSB classes focus on strength, agility, endurance, and balance — addressing the common mobility challenges faced by those living with Parkinson’s. The Wingate DPT program achieved accreditation to launch a community-based RSB class in the summer of 2022, and our students now organize and lead classes weekly in the campus' McGee Fitness Center.

We’re proud to see our students and faculty helping others fight back against Parkinson’s — one punch at a time. 💙🥊

💙 Wingate University Doctor of Physical Therapy Program: Serving Our Community 💙

As we continue our celebration of National Physical Therapy Month, we’re proud to highlight one of the standout features of our program — our Pro Bono Physical Therapy Clinic.

The Wingate Rehabilitation and Performance (W.R.A.P.) Pro Bono Clinic provides free physical therapy services to members of our local community who are underserved or medically uninsured. 💪

Led by our dedicated faculty and students, the clinic gives students hands-on opportunities to apply their clinical skills throughout all three years of the DPT program. Each student participates in the evaluation and treatment process, learning to deliver excellent, compassionate care across a wide variety of patient populations — all under the guidance of licensed faculty.

Since beginning the pro bono clinic in June of 2021, the department has served over 230 patients and provided over $196,000 worth of free health care services.

Our goal is simple: to serve others through movement, empower future clinicians, and help build a healthier community. 💙

💙 Wingate University Doctor of Physical Therapy Program: Serving Our Community 💙

As we continue our celebration of National Physical Therapy Month, we’re proud to highlight another impactful way our program serves the community.

Today, we’re shining a light on the Charlotte Pelvic Health Initiative — a free community event providing education and awareness around pelvic health issues for the greater Charlotte area. Charlotte Pelvic Health Initiative is supported by local pelvic physical and occupational therapists along with our dedicated students.

The goal of this initiative is simple but powerful: to improve knowledge of pelvic-related health issues for all genders and connect the community with supportive professionals who can help.

We’re proud to see our faculty and students leading the way in promoting awareness, education, and access to care. 💙

💙 Wingate University Doctor of Physical Therapy Program: Serving Our Community 💙

As part of our celebration of National Physical Therapy Month, we’re continuing to highlight the many ways our students and faculty give back to the community.

Today, we’re spotlighting the amazing work being done at Project 658 — a faith-based organization in the east Charlotte region that serves at-risk families, primarily immigrants.

Through this partnership, Wingate DPT provides rehabilitation services every other month, offering screenings, interventions, and individualized home exercise programs. 🏋️‍♀️

Our students take the lead in all treatment sessions, gaining hands-on experience while providing compassionate care to those who need it most.

We’re proud of our students and faculty for living out our mission of service and using movement to make a difference. 💙

💙 Wingate University Doctor of Physical Therapy Program: Serving Our Community 💙

If you know anything about the Wingate University Doctor of Physical Therapy program, you know that service is at the heart of what we do.

As part of our celebration of National Physical Therapy Month, we’re highlighting some of the many ways our students and faculty give back to the community.

Today, we’re celebrating our work with Kinetic Kids, a program that brings together children with developmental disabilities and their siblings for fun, movement, and learning!

In the fall semester, Kinetic Kids focuses on health and wellness exploring exercise, heart rate, strengthening and stretching, and the importance of nutrition and sleep. Kids also enjoy dance, yoga, parachute play, and ball games!

Our Occupational Therapy colleagues join in to provide arts and crafts that build fine motor and cognitive skills.

In the spring semester, the focus shifts to adapted sports like golf, tennis, soccer, and classic games such as red-light green-light and tag — ensuring every child can move, play, and thrive!

We’re proud to serve our community and help create opportunities for all children to experience the joy of movement. 💙

Wingate University Proudly Represented at the American Physical Therapy Association of North Carolina’s (APTA NC) Annual Fall Conference! 💙

As expected, Wingate University was well represented this weekend at the APTA NC Annual Fall Conference.

Our faculty not only attended but also served in leadership roles on the APTA NC Board of Directors — Dr. Tyler Shultz (Vice President) and Dr. Jaclyn Polk (Director of Education) participated in board meetings throughout the event. While Dr. Jill Nappi-Kaehler represented the APTA NC's Neurology Special Interest Group.

Wingate faculty also took the stage as presenters, with Dr. Karen Woodrow, Dr. Jaclyn Polk, and Dr. Deborah Prouty leading an educational session titled “I See You in the ICU: A Survival Guide for PTs and Their Students in Critical Care.”

We were also proud to see our alumni sharing their scholarship! Dr. Amari Black (’24) represented our alumni community with her poster, “Impact of Culture on the Practice of Pelvic Health in Cameroon, Africa,” co-presented with Dr. Jaclyn Polk.

Our current third-year students also shined — soon-to-be Drs. Mary Libhardt and Ashley Avelino presented their poster, “Pediatric Social Holds in the Emergency Department: A University-Based DPT Initiative,” while soon-to-be Dr. Sarah Shaw presented as part of the faculty’s previously mentioned ICU educational session.

👏 We are so proud of our faculty, students, and alumni for representing Wingate University with excellence and leadership at this year’s APTA NC Fall Conference!

💙 Wingate DPT Alumni Making a Difference 💙

We’re thrilled to share that one of our amazing alumni, Dr. Kelsey Robinson (Helms), Class of 2018, was recently featured on the news for her incredible work helping a patient who had undergone a leg amputation achieve his heartfelt goal — to walk his daughter down the aisle and dance with her at her wedding. 💃🕺

Dr. Helms and her team’s dedication, compassion, and clinical expertise made this dream a reality, and their work serves as a beautiful reminder of the life-changing impact physical therapists have every day.

We are so proud of Dr. Helms and the difference she continues to make in the lives of her patients! 💙
