Frederick Thomas Rivers, 84, passed away peacefully with family by his side on January 28, 2025. Fred was born in Essex Junction, VT on April 23, 1940, to Raymond and Helen Rivers. He married the love of his life, Theresa H. Bourque, on March 5, 1960, and together they raised their four children in Jericho, VT.

Fred worked at IBM for 30 years. After retiring in 1995 he enjoyed many years playing golf with his friends. He also volunteered at The Respite House for 8 years and was a member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Thomas Church. He was an avid Boston Red Sox, Celtics, and New York Giants fan. Fred was most proud of the family home he built on Cilley Hill and greatly enjoyed hosting “hill parties” there for family, friends, and neighbors.

A kind and generous person, Fred was always there to lend a hand and make us laugh with his quick wit. He stood strong behind his family and taught his children and grandchildren the values of hard work, generosity, and service to others.

Fred was predeceased by his parents Raymond and Helen Rivers, brother Dwight Rivers, sister, Shirley Croll, and our family’s guardian angel, grandson, Adam Rivers (1994 - 1994).

Fred is survived by his wife of 64 years, Theresa, and his children David (Noreen) Rivers, Sharon (David) Leonard, Tom (Rita) Rivers, and Bill (Karen) Rivers. Fred held a special place in his heart for his grandchildren Jessica, Matt, Sierra, Mia, Zach, Emily, Greg, and Emma, and his great-grandchildren Cora, Henry, Nathan, Grayson, and one due in May.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Our Lady of Providence Residential Care Facility for the outstanding care and support they provided Fred over the past year.

Calling hours will be held at Corbin & Palmer Funeral Home, 9 Pleasant St., Essex Junction on Friday, February 7th, from 4-6 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 8th, at 11 am at St. Thomas Church in Underhill Center. Burial will take place in the Spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Lady of Providence, 47 West Spring Street, Winooski, VT 05404.

With the help of a few generous nurse friends, our Health Services Director assembled a small nursery for our residents. These babies have been well loved, rocked, played with, and fed. They’ve loved showing the nursery off to their families too 🩵🩷

A heartwarming visit this morning with the weather lab at Our Lady of Providence assisted living in Winooski! The folks there were so welcoming and we had a great Q and A to wrap it all up. Thanks for having me!
