I’ve always been struck by Yarrow’s ability to behave amphoterically on the blood. It is a blood stauncher AND mover! 🩸How is that possible you ask? Much of the mechanism of action is its ability to tone the vascular of the body AND the body’s innate knowing of how to use it. Herbs SYNERGIZE and work with the capacity of the body to heal itself.

Red Raspberry or Rubus idaeus is a rose family astringent, with a sweet or sour, mineral like taste. This entire plant is considered medicinal, not just the leaf! 🍃 🌿The leaves help tone and protect the gut and uterus which in turn helps to reduce cramping. With its astringent quality on gut tissue, it can tighten cellular junctions and support overall health. They are also quite mineral rich. The berry with its sour flavor awakens the liver and protects cells from damage. The root has a slight astringent quality similar to blackberry root in its ability to halt diarrhea. So many uses for this wild, yet invasive, medicinal. 🌞 Have you worked with this plant?

The summer surplus 🌿🌞Just a small example of what’s out there right now. Rubus idaeus, Gaultheria procumbens, Achillea millefolium, and Asceplias syriaca (Red Raspberry, Wintergreen, Yarrow, Milkweed). Each plays a unique role in the shape of our northern New England landscape, invaders or not. What have you been spotting out there?

Scutellaria lateriflora has been such a special herb in my medicine cabinet for years now. I was first introduced to it way back when as part of nervous system tea blends that I paired with lavender, tulsi, chamomile, rose… Folks find it very effective for anxious thoughts, insomnia and panic attacks. It’s also a lovely bitter assisting in nervous stomach and digestive complaints associated with it. I found this patch at a clients home— they love to grow along mixed forest water ways. Have you spotted this mint family herb?

It’s not very often that we get the right explanation of what “Nootropic” means. 🧠It is common for folks to think there are herbs that will make us “smarter” and “better at productivity”. Truth is, there is truth and false to those statements. Usually, leaning in the direction of false. Come join our Herbal Brain Support class on July 17th (via Zoom) 6:30-8:30pm! Mullein is another of my favorite wild weeds to encounter this time of year. In its second year this plant sends up a long thick stalk and produces the most curious yellow flowers. 🌼🌿 We as herbalists love to recommend the leaves for acute and chronic lung support. The little flowers work on the nerves and soothe pain and inflammation in ears. 👂 Such a fun plant to befriend. ✨

Concocted the most fantastic height of summertime tea the other day 🔥🎇🩷🌿This was the perfect cooling remedy I needed of freshly foraged plants from my property (the linden tree growing out front), thyme & fresh catnip from the porch garden as well as some dried Damascus rose. I let this infuse for 45 mins or so (I’m guilty of making very long infusions) and sipped throughout the closing of this month’s Materia Medica on wild rose (join the subscription! ~linked in bio~) anywho… play with the plants in your yard! You won’t be disappointed.
