Co-regulation is a term that is used often, but what does it mean exactly?

I define co-regulation as a connection between a regulated adult, energetic or calm, who intentionally communicates respect, acceptance, and support, and a child who is allowed to be their true selves and feel their feelings.

In other words, co-regulate with a child by accepting a child where they are, what they are doing, and simply be there with them in a way that values their presence in the world and ensures they feel safe and loved.

WSFCS are voting this evening on a proposal which includes a plan to fire hundreds of essential school-facing staff including Assistant Principals and Exceptional Children support staff.

These proposed cuts would have a devastating impact on some of our most vulnerable students by

1) robbing them of their FEDERALLY MANDATED RIGHT to receive a Free APPROPRIATE Public Education (FAPE), and

2) further stressing the already underfunded and understaffed public schools that the families in our community -- many of whom I serve-- rely on.

As a former school-based OT and a parent of an elementary student in WSFCS, I am appalled at the audacity of this school board to even consider that this is a solution for nearly a decade of EXTREME NEGLIGENCE and lack of oversight among themselves.

It is truly remarkable to listen to the many parents, teachers, and other community members who turned out at the meeting and the rally beforehand to be a voice for these children who so often go unheard. Let's hope that those responsible for this predicament are held accountable to the highest legal extent and the Board makes the appropriate decision this evening.

Our children, families, teachers, and community should not be a scapegoat for leadership failures.
