Our community rallied together to tackle childhood cancer at today’s second annual Gold Rush Game.🎗️

Decked out with gold ribbons, the Wake Forest Football team huddled up alongside Atrium Health Levine Children’s Brenner Children’s Hospital and more than 1,000 teammates from Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist to
shine the spotlight on incredible kids like Shane. Despite his battle with Stage 3 Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma—including months of fierce chemotherapy, a feeding tube, and the challenge of septic shock—Shane has powered through with remarkable grit. Now, he’s eyeing a victory of his own: a clear PET scan and the long-awaited ringing of the bell this October.

With the team behind him, Shane took the field and reminded us of why we rally together, every season, for children and families facing cancer.

🌍✨ From African safaris to underwater adventures, chemotherapy has become an immersive experience for cancer patients at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist High Point Medical Center.

The doctors and nurses there wanted to create something special for their patients, so they turned to virtual reality to offer comfort, distraction, and inspiration. Using VR goggles, they developed a program allowing patients to choose their own adventure during infusions with options like space exploration, jungle treks and more.

Since the VR experience has been so impactful, the cancer team is taking it up a notch. They are now starting the “Bucket List Initiative” – allowing patients and their loved ones to bring their dream vacations to life.

Melody and Geoffrey always knew they wanted to become parents. After trying to conceive on their own, they turned to someone very special—Dr. Jeff Deaton, the same physician who helped Geoffrey’s parents start their family more than 30 years ago.

Back then, David and Karen Keyes had spent nine years navigating infertility and countless doctors before finding Dr. Deaton at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist. His warmth and expertise brought them the miracle they had longed for: twins Geoffrey and Katie, born after a Christmas Day pregnancy announcement.

“I prayed … could we have a boy and a girl … One for each of us,” Karen recalled.

Fast forward to February 2025, when Geoffrey and Melody welcomed their son, Aiden, into the world—another miracle made possible by Dr. Deaton.

“He was by far the kindest and the one that I felt cared the most about me and us,” Melody shared. “We have that personal connection, but you can still tell that’s just who he is.”

Two friends, brought together by a shared love for tennis, eventually discovered that their greatest match would happen far from the court.

Skip was born with just one kidney, and that kidney had a life-threatening blockage. Against the odds, Skip grew up active and full of life. In the summer of 2024, everything changed when Skip faced stage 4 kidney failure. With hope and determination, Skip and his wife Carrie made a flyer to look for a donor and shared it with their close friends, including James, Skip’s tennis buddy for years.

“He said, ‘Hey, would you look at this pamphlet we put together? We’re thinking of putting it on social media, and I want you to be aware before you saw it,'” James said. “The second I read it, I think God was like, ‘James, you’ve got three healthy kids. You’re healthy, and your wife is healthy … You’ve got two kidneys, and he needs one.'”

Testing confirmed he was a perfect match, and together, the friends underwent successful transplant surgeries at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist.

We invited Skip and James to the Winston-Salem Open to celebrate their friendship and journey together. Our special guests opened the match with the ceremonial coin toss and were recognized on the court. Let’s rally together to serve them up some love!
