Biology of Trauma
The Amygdala, Hippocampus & Prefrontal Cortex are key areas within the brain that are impacted during trauma. Memory, hypervigilance & executive function are all affected during trauma responses. This is your brain, trying to keep you safe.
I find understanding the biological reasons behind my trauma responses helps me to feel less shame, and appreciate that my body, brain & nervous system are doing their best to keep me alive.
They just don’t realize that not everything is a threat right now. But I’m OK with that, because ultimately they helped to survive. So now I can learn how to thrive. 🫶🏻
