Exciting Leadership Updates in the WSSU School of Health Sciences!!

We are proud to announce that Dr. Judy Foxworth will serve as the very first Dean's Fellow of the School of Health Sciences at Winston-Salem State University for the 2025–2026 academic year! In this expanded role, Dr. Foxworth will work on key initiatives that impact the entire School, continuing her commitment to advancing health sciences education and student success.

Stepping into departmental leadership, Dr. Sara Migliarese will serve as Interim Chair, and Dr. Nancy Smith will assume the role of Assistant Chair of the Physical Therapy Department during this time.

Please join us in congratulating these outstanding leaders as they take on new roles and responsibilities! 🎉

On Tuesday, April 29th, at the 2025 Faculty Awards Luncheon, our very own Dr. Alicia Emerson was recognized as a winner of the Winston-Salem State University Emerging Researcher of the Year Award! We congratulate Dr. Emerson on this very prestigious honor, and we are so lucky to have her as a part of our faculty!

Alicia Emerson, DPT, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy in the School of Health Sciences at Winston-Salem State University. Dr. Emerson previously was a physiotherapist for 15 years and worked primarily with uninsured/underserved patient populations with complex medical conditions, negative social determinants of health, and chronic pain. She completed her PhD from the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand in 2023, and was awarded the “Exceptional Quality Thesis” by the Division of Health Sciences. Dr. Emerson earned several degrees (MS in Physical Therapy from University of Indianapolis, MS in Rehabilitation Sciences from University of Illinois at Chicago, and a BA in Biology from Illinois Wesleyan University).

She is a Board-Certified Specialist in Orthopaedics and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists. Dr. Emerson received the 2021 Social Impact Award by the American Physical Therapy Association. Her teaching and research interests center on the functional implications in pain processing in complex patient presentations, clinical reasoning for primary care physical therapists, and managing/preventing health inequities, particularly in chronic pain.

We are excited to share that Dr. Jason Jakiela of the DPT Program was recognized as the 2025 recipient of "The Rookie: The Rising Star Excellence Award"!!

The Rookie Award celebrates the outstanding contributions of first-or second-year professors or instructors in the School of Health Sciences (SOHS). This award specifically acknowledges individuals who have demonstrated excellence in research, teaching, and service within their first two years at the SOHS. Recipients of the Rising Star Excellence Award have demonstrated a strong dedication to the SOHS community. They actively contribute to the betterment of the SOHS through teaching, research, committee work, and other endeavors, showcasing their commitment to advancing the school's mission and vision. This award not only recognizes their current achievements but also paves the way for their future growth and development, inspiring them to continue their exceptional work.

WSSU PT students and faculty gathered to shower Mr. Chris Wendt and his wife, Kelly, with gifts, diapers and cake as they prepare to have a baby girl! Mr. Wendt is the Lab Manager of the WSSU-WFU Human Performance and Biodynamics Lab, and the Clinical Biomechanics Instructor in the DPT Program. The PT Department sends many congratulations and well wishes to Chris and Kelly, and we look forward to welcoming a new member to the Ramily very soon!!

WSSU DPT research was on display this past Thursday at the 2025 WSSU Scholarship Day poster presentation event! Alayna Pruitt, an undergraduate student in the Exercise Science program, analyzed and presented on golf swing biomechanical data collected in the WSSU-WFU Human Performance and Biodynamics Lab, under the mentorship of Dr. Judy Foxworth and Mr. Chris Wendt.

10 students from the WSSU DPT program attended the APTA NC Physical Therapy Student Conclave held in Elon, NC on Saturday, March 29. This year’s theme was Into the Future: Today’s students – Tomorrow’s Future. They attended continuing education sessions, networked with potential clinical sites and employers, and listened to the key note speaker- APTA President, Dr. Kyle Covington.
