• In Canada, families gather in cozy huts for ice fishing feasts—even in freezing weather.
• In Romania, onion calendars are used to predict rain for the coming year.
• In Ukraine, the tradition of Malanka brings villages together with music, costumes, and heartfelt wishes.
• In the Philippines, 12 round fruits are served to symbolize wealth and good fortune.
• In Russia, children recite poems for Ded Moroz (Grandfather Frost) to receive gifts under the New Year tree.

This Christmas, the most precious gift isn’t found under the tree. It’s gathered around it.

Burton Hills said, “The best of all gifts around any Christmas tree: the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other.” That simple truth captures what today is really about.

During the holidays, our homes get busy. Decorations go up, furniture gets moved, and visitors come and go. But for aging loved ones, that joyful buzz can also pose risks — especially when it comes to fall hazards, overstimulation, or dietary confusion.

If you’re hosting an older adult this week, here are simple ways to help keep your gathering safe, calm, and enjoyable for them:

• Clear the walkways. Remove cords, rugs, bags, or gifts from floors and hallways.
• Offer a quiet space. Have a calm, low-stimulation room they can step into if things feel overwhelming.
• Use nightlights. Soft lighting in hallways and bathrooms helps with nighttime navigation.
• Label leftovers clearly. Make sure food is marked so loved ones with dietary needs can choose safely.
• Keep pets out of walk paths. Sudden movements or playful pets underfoot can easily cause falls.
