We all get stuck using the same words over and over!

My clients often ask for help advancing their vocabulary.

Look at this shortlist of options to use instead of think.

Which word sounds interesting to you?

Now make a conscious effort to use that one work in your next meeting.

Congrats! You have just taken a step to advance your Communication Skills!

What word do you overuse? Put it in the comment section and I will respond with four new word options for you.

Recently I was listening to a senator speak on a very important issue. He used the word "codify." I was totally confused!

Codify relates to code. BUT, the sound of "O" changes to the short "O" sound as in "cot" or the name of the fish "cod."

Honestly, I had to go home and look up the word!

The word "codify" was appropriate for his immediate audience-the senate but not for the general public.

What could he have done? Used the jargon-"codify" in his first sentence followed by a sentence easily for the general public such as "pass a law permitting or not permitting."

What is one word from your line of work that you often need to simplify for an audience?

Many of my clients work on improving their word choice for their audience.

Let's be honest, we all want people to speak in an organized manner rather than rambling until they get to their main point.

But, also let's be honest it is hard to quickly respond to difficult questions.

Try out these techniques to give your mind time to formulate an organized response.

The majority of my clients want to improve their skills at responding effectively to questions. We use the technique in the post as well as using frameworks.
Curious? Let's talk!

Day 3: Using pitch in English.
Pitch is an essential part of intonation. This video will demonstrate the pitch patterns that I posted about yesterday.

The link to that post is in the comment section.

The dialogue used in the video appears below.

Would you like some feedback on your use of pitch? DM me to set up a short free session. Or send me a recording of you using sentences and questions similar to those below.

Do people wonder if you are making a statement or asking a question?
Often my clients have Asia have been asked this type of question. This is because each language uses different intonation patterns. They may be speaking English with a rising pitch at the end of sentences.
Today is my second day of posting about intention.
There are four primary pitch patterns in English:
1a. Falling for a statement—My name is Margaret. ↘️
1b. WH-questions-slight rise on wh-word and then slight fall at the end: What↗️ time is it? ↘️
3. Rising for asking a yes/no question—Would you like to go with me? ↗️
4. Grocery list-rise after each detail to signal more information is coming and then fall on the last item: Please get me apples↗️, oranges↗️ and bananas. I asked John↗️, Ia ↗️, and Shuo↘️ to help with the project. I called him↗️, emailed him↗️and pinged him but he never responded. ↘️
5. Tag question: We are doing a great job on the project, right?
Tomorrow I will post a video demonstrating these patterns.
Check back tomorrow! The video will allow you to hear the differences. The video may also be used as a means of checking your use of American English intonation.

Have people told you they cannot tell if you are asking a question or making a statement?

Pitch change, facial and body expressions, and words signal the listener that a sentence is a question or a statement.

Notice the order of what determines a question in American English. #1 is pitch change. #2 facial or body expressions #3 are the words used.

Today--think about if your listeners get confused and ask you if you are asking or question or making a statement.

Come back tomorrow to find out what you can do to make sure your listeners are not confused when you are making statements or questions.

My first Shiitake mushrooms in 2022. I
grilled them and used them on flatbread pizza last night. Very tasty!

I have expanded my mushroom skills to growing Lion's Mane mushrooms in a grow bag purchased at a farmers' market.

How do others perceive you? A slight change in your facial expression, body posture, and tone of voice can make a neutral comment sound cruel to others. Words help soften a comment when combined with our nonverbal communication-facial expression, posture, and tone of voice.

Many of my clients request to work on ways to "soften their English." A manager needs to be friendly, encouraging, and firm. What are your goals? Do you need to know how to "soften your English?"

Do you like how you sound on a recording?

Most of us do not like how we sound on a recording because we never hear ourselves in that way.

A simple way to improve your voice is to take a deep breath and then speak on the exhale.

Sometimes I listen in on myself when I answer the phone and I think--who is that young sound, slurpy sweet person!

I can tell you exactly who that was--it was a person who forgot to take a deep breath before answering the phone!

At least 50% of my clients have had to learn to use their breath to improve their communication!

So how is your breathing?

As my children grew up, our activities and money totally focused on them.

Many of our trips were to see them participate in sports or other hobbies.

Does that sound like you?

As parents, we often forgo investing in ourselves. Yet, investment in ourselves results in helping the family too.
