Your veins are part of the heart health conversation. Almost half of women in the U.S. are affected by cardiovascular disease, and many don’t recognize the warning signs. Vein conditions such as varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency can indicate circulation issues that warrant attention. Healthy circulation supports overall cardiovascular wellness, and early care can help prevent bigger problems down the road.

Heart health and vein health go hand in hand because the heart depends on healthy vessels to move blood throughout the body. Risk factors like obesity, inactivity, and smoking affect both heart disease and vein disorders. Staying active supports calf muscle function, which helps push blood back to the heart. Managing blood pressure and cholesterol also benefits both the arterial and venous systems. During American Heart Month, it is a great time to consider your overall circulation, not just your heart. Healthy veins help keep your heart’s workload balanced.

Cold weather can affect leg discomfort. When temperatures drop:
• Your veins constrict to keep warmth in,
• Blood flow slows slightly,
• Leg heaviness or cramping can become more noticeable.
But that doesn’t mean you’re stuck with symptoms all winter! Stay active with brisk walks, gentle stretching, and short indoor workouts. Layer compression socks under your pants; they help keep circulation moving. Hydrate well—even in winter, your circulation benefits from good fluid balance. Foods rich in flavonoids (like berries, citrus, and dark chocolate) can support your vascular health, too. If winter leg fatigue persists, let’s check in to see if underlying vein disease is part of the picture.

Did you know dehydration thickens the blood? Not drinking enough water can slow circulation and increase pressure on your veins, which may worsen symptoms like leg heaviness, swelling, and discomfort. Proper hydration supports healthy blood flow and helps veins work more efficiently, especially during colder months when we naturally drink less. Keeping a water bottle nearby can be a simple step toward better vein health.
