Many pregnant women are prone to varicose veins because of the increased pressure on the veins in the legs caused by the weight of the growing fetus and the hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy.

During pregnancy, the volume of blood in the body increases to support the developing fetus. This, along with the pressure of the growing uterus on the veins in the pelvic area, can lead to increased pressure in the veins of the legs. Additionally, the hormone progesterone, which is produced in higher levels during pregnancy, can cause the walls of the veins to relax and become more distensible, allowing blood to pool more easily in the veins.

Other factors that can increase the risk of varicose veins during pregnancy include:

✅ Family history of varicose veins
✅ Previous pregnancies
✅ Age over 30 years
✅ Obesity or excess weight gain during pregnancy
✅ Prolonged standing or sitting
✅ Lack of exercise

To help prevent or manage varicose veins during pregnancy, it is essential for women to maintain a healthy weight, exercise regularly (if approved by their doctor), wear compression stockings, elevate their legs when possible, avoid prolonged periods of standing or sitting, and stay well-hydrated. Women who develop varicose veins during pregnancy should consult with their healthcare provider to discuss treatment options that are appropriate during and after pregnancy.

If you’re unsure whether to visit a vein specialist, here are five good reasons to schedule a vein consultation:
👉Persistent Leg Pain: Aching, cramping, or heaviness in your legs could be a sign of venous disease.
👉Visible Varicose or Spider Veins: These veins may be more than cosmetic concerns and can indicate underlying issues.
👉Swelling in Your Legs or Ankles: Chronic swelling could point to vein problems like venous insufficiency.
👉Skin Changes: Discoloration, dryness, or sores on your legs may result from poor circulation.
👉Family History: If varicose veins run in your family, you may be at higher risk.
Don’t wait for symptoms to worsen—early intervention can prevent long-term complications and improve your quality of life.

Varicose veins can worsen in the summer heat. Why? High temps cause veins to dilate, increasing pooling and discomfort. If your legs feel heavier or more swollen, it might be the heat talking. Keep cool with compression socks, elevate your legs when resting, and avoid long periods of standing in the sun. If your symptoms worsen, a vein specialist can help prevent complications.
