Astronaut comes back with a warning after 178 days in space.

Former NASA astronaut Ron Garan spent nearly six months aboard the International Space Station, orbiting Earth 2,842 times at about 17,500 mph (28,000 km/h). But it wasn’t the speed or distance that changed him — it was the view.

Looking down at Earth from space, he experienced what’s known as the “Overview Effect” — a cognitive shift reported by astronauts. From orbit, national borders disappear. The atmosphere looks like a thin, fragile line. And the planet feels less like separate countries, and more like a single, interconnected system.

“I didn’t see the economy,” Garan explained. “I saw an iridescent biosphere teeming with life.”

From that perspective, problems like climate change, deforestation, and biodiversity loss no longer seem separate. Instead, they appear as connected symptoms of a deeper issue: the way humanity views itself as disconnected from the planet.

He described the realization as “sobering” — that everything sustaining life on Earth exists within a paper-thin layer of atmosphere.

Since returning, Garan has focused on promoting a more unified, planet-first way of thinking.

Because from space, the illusion falls away — and what’s left is one shared world, hanging by a very thin line.
