One of the biggest misconceptions about massage is that it's a "luxury". Sometimes it is nice to just get away and relax, but most of the time, if your massage therapist has your well-being in mind, there's a lot more to it than just a simple massage.

Case in point, there's just the slightest difference in elevation of the shoulders and scapulas with this client. This can be caused by dozens of things, including work, stress, body position while driving, imbalance in hips, and the list can go on and on. With this client's symptoms, we're going to focus the next few sessions concentrating on the lower trapezius, levator scapulae, serratus anterior and the rhomboids. I'm excited and anxious to see how her symptoms improve!

One reason I got into this line of work is because the human body fascinates me. All of the intricacies that have to work together just to do something simple like smiling or pointing your finger...it's mind boggling!

The picture is a view of muscle fibers through and electron microscope. It looks like a bunch of red cords running together, pretty simple, huh? Let's break it down a little...

This is super simple layman's terms:

1️⃣ Your brain sends a signal through your nerves.
2️⃣ That signal tells your muscle to contract.
3️⃣ Inside the muscle, tiny filaments (called actin and myosin) grab onto each other and pull.
4️⃣ This pulling shortens the muscle — and that’s what creates movement.

When the pulling stops, the muscle relaxes and returns to normal length. Every rep, every step, every heartbeat happens because of this tiny sliding motion inside your muscles.

Just imagine this happening all over your body, all the time, constantly.
