What if the clock was one of the biggest obstacles standing between a patient and a kidney transplant?

05/04/2026

This video highlights a key constraint in transplant care: limited real-time information during organ preservation. Part of a broader series exploring how time, data, and coordination shape clinical decision-making.

Why are donated kidneys sometimes never transplanted?
The answer often lies in the narrow window between donation and transplant—a period defined by time constraints, limited real-time data, and critical decisions made under pressure.

This video is part of a broader series examining the system constraints that shape transplant care—and the solutions beginning to emerge.

As we wrap an energizing week at LSI USA 2026, one theme stood out:
Innovation in transplantation isn’t just about better devices—it’s about better systems—and the cost of waiting, both clinical and economic, is higher than we often acknowledge.

In her talk, Carrie DiMarzio highlighted how expanding time, enabling real-time physiologic insight, and supporting more informed decisions can help reduce system costs while increasing organ utilization.

Grateful for the meaningful conversations this week—and the shared urgency to move the field forward.

If we missed you at LSI, we’d love to connect.

Thank you, Matt O’Brien of Piper Sandler, for visiting BMI OrganBank and the Duke University DEVOL Lab to discuss BMI OrganBank’s room-temperature machine perfusion and the evolving landscape of organ preservation.

The conversation allowed for an open exchange of perspectives on emerging technologies in transplantation and the dynamics shaping the field.

Thoughtful dialogue across research, clinical practice, and industry perspectives helps move the field forward.

At the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) Winter Symposium, BMI OrganBank presented new preclinical data from a head-to-head study evaluating room-temperature machine perfusion with OrganBank Kidney® against hypothermic machine preservation in a controlled transplant model.
This data built on prior preclinical work as the platform moves toward clinical evaluation later this year.

Our full analysis outlines:
• The head-to-head study design
• Why delayed graft function remains a critical unmet need
• How active preservation may expand transplant confidence — and how these findings fit into the broader evolution of transplant preservation

We’re pleased to share that Nader Abraham, MD (Duke University School of Medicine) will be presenting this Saturday at the American Society of Transplant Surgeons - ASTS Winter Symposium.

His presentation will highlight recent investigational work in extended organ preservation that reflects meaningful progress in the field. Details will be shared during the presentation, and we will release more information afterward.

More to come.

Carrie DiMarzio shares why her work starts with people, not technology.
Drawing on her background in engineering, biomedical research, and patient advocacy, Carrie reflects on how urgency, limited information, and system-level constraints shape the real experiences of patients and care teams every day—and why she believes transplant care can be designed to work better.
This is a look at the passion and purpose behind her work.

What drives leadership in one of medicine’s most complex and high-stakes fields?

In our latest Leadership Spotlight, Carrie DiMarzio shares how her background in engineering, biomedical research, and patient advocacy shapes her approach to organ preservation and transplant innovation.

Carrie explains why many viable donor organs still go unused—not because of a donor shortage, but because of time constraints, logistics, and limited information—and why rethinking how organs are preserved and assessed is critical for supporting better decision-making across the transplant system.

This story isn’t just about technology. It’s about improving quality of life, supporting clinicians, and designing a system that gives donated organs a better chance to reach the people who need them.
