The Power of Paying Attention

Recently, a pediatrician at Novant Health noticed something small but important on a child who wasn’t even the patient that day.

A quick moment of awareness turned into life-saving action. What looked like a simple bruise led to the diagnosis of a serious condition, and because of that provider’s attentiveness, that little girl is here today.

Stories like this remind us:
-Every detail matters
-Every interaction counts
-Every child deserves our full attention

Just Like Dr. Pam Young, the providers at Arbor Pediatrics are committed to slowing down, listening, and truly seeing each child who walks through our doors even when it’s unexpected.

Because sometimes, the smallest observation can make the biggest difference.

When a routine visit for swimmer’s ear led Dr. Pamela Young to notice unusual bruising on 6-year-old Annie Smith, her quick instincts set off a life-saving chain of care, turning an ordinary appointment into an extraordinary story of vigilance, faith and coordinated medical care.

Spring has sprung—and we are READY for more time outside!

With all that fresh air and fun comes an important reminder: helmets every time!

Before your child hops on a bike or scooter, make sure their helmet:
• Fits snugly with no gaps
• Sits about 1–2 finger widths above the eyebrows
• Is worn for every ride—even quick trips down the street

Getting kids into the habit early makes all the difference. When worn correctly, helmets can reduce the risk of head injury by 45–85%—that’s huge!

So grab that helmet, double-check the fit, and let the outdoor adventures begin.

Ready, set… GOOOOOO!

Spring Allergies Are Here! Is Your Child Sneezing More Than Usual?

As the weather warms up, pollen levels start to rise — and many children begin experiencing seasonal allergies.

Common allergy symptoms in kids include:
• Sneezing
• Runny or stuffy nose
• Itchy or watery eyes
• Frequent throat clearing
• Dark circles under the eyes (“allergy shiners”)

How to help reduce allergy symptoms:
✔ Have your child wash hands and face after playing outside
✔ Change clothes after outdoor activities
✔ Keep windows closed during high pollen days
✔ Consider showering before bedtime to remove pollen

Sometimes allergies can look like a cold, but allergy symptoms often last for weeks instead of days. Whether your child is struggling with seasonal allergies or other symptoms, the team at Arbor Pediatrics is here to help!

Call our office if you have concerns or need guidance. 336-277-1650

We’re always happy to help your child breathe easier this spring.

Should My Child Stay Home from School?

Parents ask us this question every week at Arbor Pediatrics! Here are some general guidelines to help.

Keep your child home if they have:
• Fever over 100.4°F
• Vomiting or diarrhea within the last 24 hours
• Severe cough or trouble breathing
• Rash with fever
• Pink eye with drainage

Children can usually return to school when:
• They are fever-free for 24 hours without medication
• Vomiting and diarrhea have stopped for 24 hours
• Their energy and appetite are improving

Keeping sick children home helps protect classmates, teachers, and your child’s recovery.

If you’re unsure, our team at Arbor Pediatrics is always happy to help guide you.

Call us with questions or schedule through MyChart.
