Millennials are considered the first generation to consciously practice self-reparenting while simultaneously parenting their own children. This is driven by a desire to break negative cycles from their own upbringing, prioritize mental health, and raise emotionally healthy children. They do this by using new parenting methods, learning from past trauma, and actively trying to provide the emotional support they may have lacked, a process that involves healing themselves as they guide their kids.
How millennials are reparenting themselves:
📑Breaking cycles: They are actively working to stop negative patterns like verbal or emotional abuse that they may have experienced, opting instead for a more gentle and communicative parenting style.
📑Prioritizing mental health: Many millennials have sought therapy to address past trauma and develop coping skills, which helps them to parent more effectively and heal their “inner child”.
📑Addressing past pain: They are consciously trying to be the kind of parent they needed when they were young, such as apologizing for mistakes, validating their child’s feelings, and setting healthy boundaries.
📑Emotional and neurological healing: The hormonal and neurological shifts of parenting can create a potent opportunity for healing, allowing parents to establish more secure attachment patterns and break the cycle of intergenerational trauma.
