Happy Birthday to Altina Schinasi!
The mother of fashion eyewear, Altina Schinasi (August 4, 1907 – August 19, 1999) was a Jewish-American sculptor, filmmaker, actress, entrepreneur, window dresser, designer, and inventor.
She was known for designing what she called the "Harlequin eyeglass frame", now popularly known as cat-eye glasses!
Her avant-garde design transformed eyeglass frames from something drab and utilitarian into a coveted fashion accessory, and epitomized glamour in the 1930's and 40's! This earned her the Lord & Taylor Annual American Design Award in 1939, and both Vogue and Life magazines have credited Schinasi with revolutionizing the eyewear industry and aesthetic. Her design's influence can still be felt in the fashion industry, even today 💖
