I had the honor of being on the Birth Ease Loss Support podcast with the beautiful Birth Ease Michelle Smith. She was able to finish it on such a special day of Lucky’s Lighting and for that I am forever thankful for the timing! If you have gone through loss or are experiencing loss or would like to hear our whole story I would love for you to listen ❤️

🦋 In this special release episode in honor of Lucky’s Lighting on Nov. 8th, 2021, Brianne Griffis CLC, SBD, Birth/Postpartum/ Bereavement Doula, and Certified Lactation Counselor, candidly shares with Michelle her journey of motherhood through pregnancy, life-threatening hyperemesis gravidarum, birth, and the loss of 5 pregnancies. Together they discuss how trauma and loss can take many forms. Brianne provides many valuable insights and resources for grieving parents as well as birth and bereavement professionals.

🎙"I will never forget the words he [Dr. O'Leary] said to me. He said, 'While don't know your space, I know this space.' Those words were just so impactful."—Brianne Griffis

Testimonial: We met Brianne and her team when my son was five weeks old, and my only regret is that we hadn’t found them sooner! My husband and I were struggling from lack of sleep, and these doulas saved us. Compassionate and professional with excellent communication, these women have became part of our village. Now my son is 12 weeks old, and we are all thriving from their help. Lauren

A baby’s latch might look perfect from the outside, but what’s happening inside matters!

Meet my brand new son, Oliver. Oliver was about 5 days old in the photos below. His latch looked like a textbook photo.

• lips flanged and sealed on the breast
• head tilted back
• chin pressed into the breast and nose clear
• “deep” asymmetrical latch

But when Oliver was finished nursing, it was evident that the latch wasn’t giving a clear picture.

• two toned lips
• whitened lines around mouth (creasing)
• lipstick shaped ni***es with blanching
• pain with latch
• breasts still engorged after feeding

Oliver was struggling to use his tongue correctly and as a result, was using his lips to stay on the breast. With poor tongue function, suction was inconsistent and nursing was tiresome. As a result, he did not effectively remove milk and my breasts stayed painfully engorged. He did have adequate intake, but it was not because he was feeding well - it was because he didn’t have to do anything once the overactive letdown kicked in!

If you were told your baby’s latch was perfect but it doesn’t FEEL perfect, don’t hesitate to investigate why.
