When the Winter Haven Hospital/Florida State University Family Medicine Residency Program opened its doors in 2020, its goal was to address a physician shortage by retaining at least 50% of its graduates in Polk County. Nearly 80% of the residents who have graduated physicians who have graduated from the program since 2020 are now or soon will be practicing in Polk County, including six of the eight most recent grads. Our virtual Understanding Breastfeeding course covers breastfeeding essentials for new moms, including when to call for help and partner tips. Congratulations to Holly for her recent DAISY Award! She was nominated for the award by one of her colleagues, who said of her: "I have had the privilege of working alongside her for many years in the NICU, and she has always been an inspiration to work with. Her compassion, quick thinking, and dedication to both her patients and their families are truly remarkable. One day, while she was visiting the Mother-Baby unit, Holly stopped by to say hello. A baby suddenly needed immediate intervention. Without hesitation, Holly stepped in, not only as a skilled NICU nurse but as a compassionate presence for the baby's mother. Thanks to her presence, we were able to provide the life-saving care needed. Holly is truly a compassionate and loving soul, and I can think of no one more deserving of this recognition."

In an effort to accommodate an increased need for joint replacements, our hospital is offering a new robotics option. ROSA® uses data collected before surgery and during surgery to help ensure an implant's customized fit. With this system, the surgeon can also use a series of X-rays to create a 3D model of the knee anatomy, which allows the surgeon to plan many specifics of the knee replacement prior to surgery. Congratulations to Emily, one of our recent DAISY Award winners! She was nominated by a fellow team member who was moved by Emily's rapport with her patients and their families. From the nomination: "Emily was caring for a patient who was very sick. He had a large family at the bedside asking all the right questions to understand what was happening. Emily answered them all and then had the hardest conversation with them -- that he was not going to recover. She made plans to honor his religious customs after death as well. Emily led the family in a procession of sorts through the hospital as far as we could allow. These actions gave the family so much peace and comfort. She gives everyone the best care she can and goes the extra mile for them." Thank you for all you do, Emily!

Our Women's Hospital team got a visit from Millie, BayCare's therapy dog for team members. Millie is a beautiful beagle who was rescued during Hurricane Milton last year. These days, she travels with her human (and fellow team member) Jennifer Stitik as part of the Employee Assistance Program. She's definitely a good girl! Millie's story is in the comments 💙
