Born/From: 1904 – Washington, D.C. |

Dr. Charles Drew was a pioneering surgeon and medical researcher whose groundbreaking work transformed modern blood banking. With a deep interest in blood transfusions and the properties of blood, he developed innovative methods for processing and storing blood plasma, making it possible to preserve and transport life-saving blood on a large scale.

As director of one of the first large-scale blood banks, Dr. Drew helped save thousands of lives during World War II. In 1941, he played a key role in establishing the American Red Cross blood bank, creating standards that continue to shape emergency medicine today.

He later served as a professor at Howard University, mentoring future generations of Black physicians. His legacy lives on in hospitals and communities everywhere, where safe blood storage and transfusion practices continue to save lives and advance health equity. 🩵

Daniel Hale Williams, MD was a pioneering surgeon, educator, and advocate for equitable healthcare. In 1884, Dr. Williams faced racial discrimination that limited opportunities for Black medical professionals. So, in turn, he created change himself. He founded Provident Hospital, the nation’s first Black-owned in*******al hospital, providing quality care to patients of all backgrounds while opening doors for Black physicians and nurses.

He also cofounded the National Medical Association. Dr. Williams established one of America’s first training schools for Black nurses, creating opportunities for interns to receive hands-on medical education. He was best known for performing one of the first successful open-heart surgeries!

His work advanced modern medicine while promoting access, education, and inclusion in healthcare, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire generations today. 🩵

Born/From: 1813 - New York City, NY |

James McCune Smith, at age 24, earned his bachelor's, master's, and medical degrees. Once he established his own medical office, he left his mark as a physician, treating all patients as the Chief Medical Doctor at the New York City Colored Orphan Asylum.

He used science and medicine to challenge racist beliefs and advocate for equality in healthcare. Through his work, Dr. Smith proved that data, education, and compassion are powerful tools for justice, laying the groundwork for health equity and evidence based medicine that still guide us today.
