I was just having this exact conversation with colleagues in my studio yesterday. pilates, I work exclusively with comprehensively trained teachers, which naturally creates a deeper understanding of the Pilates system and a more refined teaching skill set.

Even so, we found ourselves reflecting on how many continuing education programs still fall short in truly advancing teachers. There often seems to be an emphasis on choreography, rather than developing movement literacy, nuanced cueing, and the ability to hold clear, supportive boundaries with clients.

I often think of something Romana said to me: “When you’re bored with the work, it’s because you’re not going deep enough.” That has stayed with me throughout my 26+ years of teaching.

In that time, I’ve encountered very few teachers who are genuinely willing to step beyond familiarity—to be challenged, to learn, and to engage more deeply with the work and the experience behind it.
This article gives me hope that there may be a shift coming—one that values depth, curiosity, and true teaching skill over simply learning the next sequence.
