UCF alumnus and nationally recognized foot and ankle surgeon Dr. Gideon J. Lewis continues to inspire future physicians through his UCF Surgical Internship Program, which gives undergraduates rare hands-on experience in surgery, patient care, and research. Over 15 years, 98% of the program’s 85 interns have gone on to Medical School.

“This program was born from a desire to provide students with something I never had — hands-on, immersive exposure to surgical medicine while still in college,” said Dr. Lewis.

The program’s emphasis on mentorship and real-world clinical experience has made it one of the most competitive undergraduate medical internships in the country.

Dr. Deborah German, UCF’s founding dean of the College of Medicine, praised his dedication: “Dr. Lewis exemplifies the portion of the Hippocratic Oath that says each of us must be committed to training the next generation of doctors.”

Honored to perform surgery on Colton Boomer and get him back to doing what he loves 🏈. Using Arthrex’s InternalBrace™ innovation, I was able to restore stability to his ankle and guide him through recovery with a tailored rehab protocol.

Today, Colton is kicking strong as the starting placekicker for Boise State University. Proud moments like this remind me why I’m passionate about sports medicine and helping athletes—from weekend warriors to the pros—return to peak performance.
