Skier's Thumb:
If you've heard this term before, you probably know how common this injury is to skiers. It is also known as Gamekeepers' thumb and can occur with any extreme force on the thumb. When we use the strap of our ski poles, the position of the thumb is abducted, or out to the side from the hand. At the base of your thumb, you have a strong ligament that connects the 1st metacarpal (long bone in your hand) to the proximal phalanx (the bone of your thumb closest to your hand). The Ulnar Collateral Ligament (UCL) in on the index finger side of your thumb and is vulnerable to injury when your thumb is out to the side. The UCL is important for strength and stability of your thumb. If you fall on to your hand with your thumb abducted, as you are holding your ski pole, tearing the UCL is common. The symptoms are pain and swelling in the thumb with possible weakness with holding a glass or writing. The diagnosis of UCL sprain is made with an x-ray and/or a clinical exam testing the ligament. The injury is rated by severity and the less severe, or partial tear or sprain, is responsive to immobilization. A more severe or total rupture of the ligament is treated with surgery to repair the ligament.
At the Denver Health Alpine Clinic in Fraser, our Certified Hand Therapist frequently sees these injuries. Depending on the severity, the thumb is splinted with a low temperature plastic material that is removable for 4-6 weeks. The splint may even be worn inside a glove so patients can return to the slopes before too long. Motion to prevent stiffness is begun early in a protected manner.

BFRT (Blood Flow Restriction Training):
The Alpine clinic is now happy to offer BFRT for physical therapy patients. BFRT allows us to challenge your muscles without overstressing healing tissues — helping you rebuild strength safely and efficiently.
What is it?
BFRT involves placing a specialized cuff around the upper arm or thigh to gently restrict blood flow while performing light resistance exercises. This allows your body to get the benefits of heavy strength training — without lifting heavy weights.
Research shows BFRT can:
✔️ Improve muscle strength
✔️ Reduce muscle loss after injury or surgery
✔️ Support joint protection
✔️ Speed up rehabilitation timelines
Who benefits?
Because the exercises use low loads (typically 20–30% of your max), BFRT is especially helpful for patients recovering from:
• ACL reconstruction
• Rotator cuff injuries
• Joint replacements
• Tendon injuries
• Persistent pain conditions
Questions?
Talk to your PT or doctor if you think BFRT may be something you would benefit from.

What Is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy (PFPT)?
PFPT is a specialized type of physical therapy that focuses on the muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues that support the bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs. These muscles play a key role in core stability, posture, bladder and bowel control, and sexual health. Pelvic floor physical therapy is personalized, respectful, and designed to help you move, feel, and live better.

As a pelvic floor physical therapist, Allison Maynes, PT, DPT, is specially trained to assess how these muscles are working and create an individualized treatment plan to help them function better—whether they’re too tight, too weak, or not coordinating properly. Ask your provider for a referral or contact Denver Health Alpine Clinic to learn more.

Conditions Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy Can Treat:
Urinary incontinence (leakage with coughing, sneezing, or exercise)
Urinary urgency or frequency
Pelvic pain or pressure
Painful periods or pelvic cramping
Pain during or after in*******se
Pregnancy-related pelvic pain
Postpartum recovery
Pelvic organ prolapse
Bowel issues, such as constipation or difficulty emptying
Hip, low back, or tailbone pain related to pelvic muscle dysfunction

Denver Health was proud to support the hockey community at the 2026 Grand Lake, Colorado Pond Hockey Classic this past weekend. What is typically a celebration of community and the spirit of the game carried deeper meaning in the wake of the tragedy on Interstate 70 earlier in the week.

Our hospital cared for seven patients injured in the multi vehicle crash involving the Santa Clarita Lady Flyers hockey team and continues to support their recovery.

In an extraordinary display of strength, the SC Lady Flyers carried on and went on to win the Western Girls Hockey League championship just days later. In response, the hockey community in Colorado and beyond has rallied in support.

Moments like these remind us of the importance of community and showing up for one another when it matters most. Our hearts are with all impacted. 💙

Nina has lived in Grand County for over 40 years. Her career in Occupational and Hand Therapy has spanned at least that long, and she has been with Denver Health Alpine Clinic in Fraser for almost 10 years.

Nina provides specialized upper extremity care as a Certified Hand Therapist. She works closely with orthopedic and hand surgeons, providing comprehensive care for fractures, tendon and nerve injuries, arthritis and repetitive motion conditions. Splinting is a large part of her practice, providing protection to enhance healing, support for weakened structures, and encouraging motion to stiff joints.

Nina also volunteers with a nonprofit providing care to individuals who would otherwise not be able to access specialized therapy. These travels take her all over the world. When she's not working or volunteering, Nina can be found on and off the trails, skiing, hiking or running and generally enjoying this beautiful place we call home.
