Happy Thanksgiving from the Nowlin’s 🧡

Whatever this year has held, remember this:

Lift your head.
Look up.
Your redemption draws near.

We’re praying your day is filled with peace, gratitude, and hope.

To my fellow physicians, surgeons, clinicians, and healthcare warriors…

Between saving tiny lives and serving our families, Thanksgiving often finds us in two operating rooms the hospital and the kitchen.

Today may feel like the longest call shift… the meal prep, the errands, the scheduling, the running back and forth it’s a different kind of clinical marathon.

But here’s your gentle reminder pediatric care teaches us this every day:

Stability beats speed.
Precision beats panic.
Care for yourself first so you can care for others better.

Hydrate between tasks. Take micro breaks like you do between cases. Delegate like you do in the OR. And protect your energy like the precious resource it is.

Gratitude is tomorrow.
Grace is today.

You don’t have to sprint into Thanksgiving.
You can scrub in slowly, prepare steadily, and still deliver something beautiful tomorrow.

Wishing you strength in the work, joy in the process, and rest for the journey.

Give thanks to God. Heal others. Love your people. Repeat.

Deciding between private practice, hospital employment, or joining a group is one of the biggest career choices physicians face. Dr. J shares her journey through all three — and the lessons she learned along the way.

From balancing motherhood with a demanding schedule, to seeking autonomy over call duties, vacations, and patient care, private practice ultimately offered the freedom that aligned with her priorities: faith, family, and flexibility.

Each path comes with its own benefits and challenges — guaranteed income and structure in a hospital setting, teamwork and shared responsibilities in a group, or independence and ownership in private practice.

The key? Choosing what supports the life you value most.

👩‍⚕️✨ “My priority is God first, then my family.”

Today, I honor all the brave men and women who have served this country with courage, sacrifice, and love. 🇺🇸
But today, I especially honor my father, Courtney Hercules Johnson, a Vietnam Veteran whose strength shaped my life in ways words can barely hold.

I lost him in 2009 to leukemia, and that loss was one of the deepest valleys I’ve ever walked through. Yet even now, his voice lives in me.
He was the first one to tell me at 12 years old, “You sure can,” when I said I wanted to be a pediatric neurosurgeon.
He believed in me before I believed in myself.

His legacy is courage.
His legacy is love.
His legacy is faith.

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” — John 15:13

Today, I carry his name, his strength, and his faith forward.
And I thank every veteran who has served — your sacrifice does not go unseen, your courage does not go forgotten.
May God keep, strengthen, and cover your families always. 🤍

Happy Veterans Day.
In honor. In remembrance. In gratitude.

🧠💔 Grief doesn’t just live in the heart — it lives in the brain, body, and nervous system.

In our latest episode of Life with Keyne & Malcolm, we dive deep into how grief reshapes us — not just emotionally, but physically and mentally too.

As someone who’s lived through grief and committed to understanding its impact, I’m honored to share this conversation with you. Together with Dr. Keyne and myself, we explore:
• What grief is beyond the sadness
• How it affects the brain and nervous system
• The physical symptoms no one talks about
• Why relationships and communication can change
• The difference between healing and getting stuck
• Tools to support the mind and body through loss
• The reality of hope and love after loss

✨ If you’re grieving, or supporting someone who is, I hope this brings you comfort and clarity:
You’re not broken. You’re grieving. And your brain is trying to protect you.

🎧 Tune in with us — let’s hold space, seek understanding, and heal, one breath at a time.
