Thursday Thought: You Are More Than a Score

To everyone taking or retaking the MCAT—breathe. This one test does not define your worth, your calling, or your ability to become an extraordinary physician 🤍

Maybe the score wasn’t what you hoped for. That’s okay. Shift your focus to what drew you to medicine in the first place. Let your passion fuel your perseverance 🩺💊

There are countless ways to strengthen your path:
• Seek out mentors who believe in you.
• Shadow physicians who inspire you.
• Get involved in research, writing, and publishing.
• Serve in communities where compassion matters more than a number.

You are not your score—you are your story, your resilience, and your purpose.

“The race is not given to the swift nor the battle to the strong, but to the one who endures to the end.” —Ecclesiastes 9:11

Keep showing up. Keep growing. Keep believing.

This past weekend, I had the incredible honor of hooding my mentee, Dr. Rolanda Brown. I am beyond proud of all that Dr. Brown has accomplished, and I’m deeply grateful that she chose me to be part of such a special moment in her journey. 💜

Congratulations to everyone who has graduated this season — what a blessing and a tremendous achievement. 🎓✨

✨ Thursday Thoughts… on a Monday ✨

Yes, I know it’s Monday. But last Thursday I couldn’t post—because I was the one in the surgery center… not as a surgeon, but as a patient.

That’s right. Last week, Dr. Johnson-Nowlin had an upper endoscopy. And while it was “just a procedure” on paper, for me—it felt like major surgery. The anxiety was real.

But what I experienced reminded me of something I try to teach my team every day: kindness and compassion matter.
The CRNA gently rubbed my head to calm me. The pre-op nurse spoke nothing but encouragement and affirmations. Every person greeted me with a smile. There was no negative chatter, no rushing—just peace.

So what led me there?

I’d been dealing with:
• Chest pain
• Back and abdominal pain
• Dizziness and high blood pressure
• Fatigue, coughing, and trouble taking deep breaths
• And epigastric pain that wouldn’t quit

Naturally, I feared it was my heart. But after a full cardiac workup came back clear, I did what many doctors do (but probably shouldn’t): I tried to treat myself—Pepcid, Prilosec, TUMS—you name it.

Nothing helped.

Finally, I saw a phenomenal GI nurse practitioner who listened carefully, started me on Carafate, and scheduled me for an upper endoscopy. The diagnosis?

➡️ Acute gastritis and a stomach ulcer.

Now begins the true healing—not just of my body, but of my perspective.

Being on the other side of the bed reminded me: Every patient carries invisible fears. Every touch, every word, every smile—matters 🤍

This week, be kind. Be gentle. Be present.
You never know who’s on the other side of that hospital gown.

Today, I pause to honor the brave men and women who placed their lives on the line—not for recognition or reward, but for the freedom and safety of people they would never know or meet.

Their sacrifice echoes the words of Jesus in John 15:13:
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

To their families, I lift a prayer for peace and comfort. Your loved ones are not forgotten—their courage and legacy live on in the freedoms we hold dear.

May we never take their sacrifice for granted.
