“Snoring in children is not considered normal, but it doesn’t always mean something is wrong or requires treatment. We become concerned when snoring is accompanied by signs of breathing obstruction during sleep, poor-quality sleep, behavioral changes such as hyperactivity or impulsiveness, or daytime fatigue.”

Had to pop to West Palm to do bronchoscopies this morning. Worked with a great team. I usually take but they seem to have stopped the 4.25am train. That means I have to drive down if I want to do 7.30am procedures. I guess I have to start my procedures at 8.30am so I can keep taking the train.

This weekend, I gave a lecture on Narcolepsy in children. Narcolepsy in children is under recognized. Several kids deal with symptoms for 7-15 years before they are eventually diagnosed. Sadly, that means they have many of the devastating effects of missed diagnosis such as, school failure, mood disorders like depression, anxiety disorder as well as a general feeling of poor self worth. Additionally, they are more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD, inattentive type or what is occasionally termed as ADD.

Narcolepsy is a pediatric condition that is typically diagnosed in adulthood. That is really a tragedy because most kids deal with narcolepsy symptoms through their middle and high school and that can lead to school failure, as well as comorbid conditions like depression, anxiety and ADHD. Daytime sleepiness is never normal in children and teenagers. Falling asleep in school is never normal. A teenager who would rather nap than hangout with their mates after school is not normal.
