The last good use for old wood is ground cover… To kill stubborn weeds around more valuable plants. This set of old plywood was cut from full pieces that were given to us by a friend over 30 years ago. They still had some integrity then, and we used those plywood pieces to build a small fort For our children to play in and even sleep overnight in. That eventually out and we rescued the same pieces of plywood and cut them to form walls for raised bed in our vegetable garden. In time, even this was too much a duty for them, and slowly one by one, the pieces fell off of their posts, and the raised bed was no more. These three are the last of what was once a large stack of 4 x 8 plywood pieces and now they’re only remaining task is to choke out the weeds beneath them. I think we got the most used we can out of that wood.

Hope springs eternal as Spring rolls in. Seedlings start in the greenhouse and work their way outside to acclimatize to the stronger sun and warming temperatures before going into the ground. More tropical residents stay for a while longer thriving in the extra moist environment. Orchids particularly benefit from this arrangement, needing a temperature difference between night and day of about twenty degrees to stimulate flowers.

Some crops are still producing despite the daily rain and temperatures in the 90s. The heat loving plants are thriving ,and we have some star fruit again, along with red papaya. The pond is filling up with the storms coming so frequently. Soon the lake will merge with it,and canoeing from the property edge will be possible.
