“For millennia, the Indian Pass area in eastern Imperial County, where SMP Gold plans to drill and disturb the habitat, has held religious and historical significance for the Quechan Tribe. The area contains sleeping circles, geoglyphs and pottery shards left behind by the tribe’s ancestors, to name some artifacts.”

The Quechan tribe opposed the Oro Cruz Project at a county Planning Commission meeting where a public hearing was scheduled for SMP’s project.

As Kwatsan people, our story does not originate in present day Fort Yuma. We believe our creation began at and we descended from Avi Kwa Ame, or Spirit Mountain. We must protect this sacred area now and ensure its protection for the future. To us, this place means more than land. It is a living, breathing ecosystem that holds markings and the spirits of our ancestors. Call your tribal council members today and tell them we must act now to protect Avi Kwa Ame

As the years pass, we learn that not all ideas stand the test of time. The Antiquities Act, however, remains timeless.
