In July of 2024 Madison County EMS was awarded $10,000 from the Prairie Meadows Community Betterment Grant. This grant was able to help fund the purchase and installation of a new Stryker PowerLoad System, which was just recently installed. With this new cot system, the manual effort in lifting the cot into the truck will be reduced, alleviating the potential risk of injuries to crew members, and allowing for safer patient transporting. Thank you, Prairie Meadows, for helping make this upgrade happen!

This week Madison County EMS hosted a 4-day Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) class. 5 Madison County EMS employees along with 9 additional students from across the state of Iowa attended. This class was organized by Blank Children’s Hospital’s, Iowa State Child Passenger Safety Coordinator and the Governors Traffic Safety Bureau. It’s important to them that all children are being safely transported at all times through all stages of car seats and seatbelts. In effort to do so they have a goal to have at least 5 CPST’s in each county, that will be able to educate and help caregivers in safety transporting their children. After this week’s class certification of 5 Madison County EMS employees, Madison County now has 7 total CPST’s. If you have any questions about seat safety or would like to have CPST help check or install your car seat feel free to stop in during office hours (Mon-Fri 8am-4pm) or call (515)-462-2253 to make an appointment.

In honor of February being American Heart Month, Madison County EMS would like to share a recent CPR success story.

On 12/28/2023, Madison County EMS was dispatched to a male who had collapsed on a job site, was unresponsive and not breathing. CPR was initiated immediately by bystanders on scene. Madison County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff Jason Barnes, and Deputies Don Kinney and Clayton Allen, then arrived on scene and applied an AED to the patient. The patient was then defibrillated and CPR was continued while awaiting the arrival of EMS. Once Madison County EMS Paramedics, Brady Foreman, Garrett Boyle, and Stephen Fox arrived, further advanced life-saving measures were performed. A successful patient outcome was achieved with the help of early recognition of cardiac arrest and the activation of the emergency response system.

High-quality CPR and early deliberation are proven to increase the chance of survivability of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. If you want to get CPR certified or renew your current CPR certification contact Madison County EMS at 515-462-2253 to set up a class.
