Powell Johnson on Nov. 2, 1880, received a patent for an Eye-Protector. Johnson designed his Eye-Protectors β€œfor use of furnace-men, puddlers (iron manufacturing workers who used a furnace to convert pig iron into wrought iron), firemen, and others exposed to glare of strong light, as well as persons of weak sight,” according to the patent. The protector had two sets of circular wire frames, separated by β€œa short distance,” with hinged temples on the inner frame only and semi-opaque cloth disks inserted in both frames to protect the eyes from bright light. They were the first of their kind.

February is
Patricia Bath became the first African American woman doctor to receive a patent for a medical invention and at the same time revolutionized the treatment of cataracts in millions of patients.

Dedicating most of her life to the treatment and prevention of blindness in African Americans, in 1988 Dr. Bath patented a unique and specialized technique to remove cataracts quickly and painlessly with a laser device called the Laserphaco Probe, replacing the more barbaric methods in use at the time, which involved grinding and drilling to remove that cataract obstructions.

The first Black licensed optometrist in the U.S. and Canada was Dr. William H. Lawson. He graduated from the Toronto School of Optometry in 1912 and set up practice in Detroit MI in 1916.

At the time of Dr. Lawson’s retirement, there were only 100 Black optometrists of nearly 24,000 (.004%). Today, with nearly 60,000 eye care providers nationwide, less than 2% of practicing optometrists and ophthalmologists in the United States identify as Black or African American.

According to Dr. Keisha Elder in The Journal of the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO), β€œA diverse and inclusive optometric environment produces many organizational and healthcare benefits. Diversity is associated with improved performance, innovation, creativity, access to care, patient satisfaction, patient health outcomes, student persistence and positive student outcomes.”
