as a birthworker, what’s most important to me is that you feel supported on whatever postpartum journey you’re on. while i will always provide education to my clients about what is/isn’t safe for encapsulation, ultimately the choice of what to do with your placenta and your body is completely up to you. a few months ago, a client had some circumstances during their labor that led them to feel uncomfortable with pursuing placenta consumption. i gently educated, and then followed their led. we decided that for them it would be best to celebrate their placenta and all the work it did in a different way. i created a resin cord keepsake for them (this is an add on option for any client!), a print, and then i dehydrated and ground their placenta into powder to use in their garden (this is always an option for any client; and is especially a good option for folks who develop an infection during labor, or maybe for folks who still have a placenta kickin’ around their freezer as their baby gets on the bus for kindergarten). the bottom line is, this is your journey and your body and you get to decide what to do with your placenta.
