Dear Property Owner, This year we are again asking those we help to help us. Per the current Postal Laws and Gaming Regulations, we are still unable to send you raffle tickets anymore. For the last several years we sent this same request letter asking you to continue to support us by mailing a “Free Will Donation” to the fire department to show your support. This donation is a tax deductible contribution. Contributions to the department the last several years through this letter and our celebration event has helped in replacing fifteen (15) sets of turn out gear and equip all members with pagers. Your support directly helps us keep our budget as low as possible which is a direct savings to you as a taxpayer. The Town of Grand Rapids Fire Department is currently staffed with 1 fulltime Fire Chief, 55 Fire/EMS members, and 6 EMS members to serve our community. The department covers 100 square miles in its first-out response area. In 2011, the department responded to 266 calls for service. Your contributions this year will help in the following areas of purchasing a new Thermal Imaging Camera and several Automated External Defibrillator for our Medical First Responders: Thermal Imaging Camera (TIC) - is a type of thermographic camera used in firefighting/search and rescue. TIC allows firefighters to see areas of heat through smoke, darkness, or heat-permeable barriers. They are expensive pieces of equipment since their popularity and adoption by firefighters following the September 11 attacks in 2001. Thermal imaging cameras pick up body heat, and they are normally used in cases where people are trapped or lost where rescuers cannot see them without this tool. The average cost of this unit is $10,000. Our goal is to add this unit to our rescue squad to better serve you or anyone within the community that needs help when lost or trapped. Automated External Defibrillator (AED) – is a portable electronic device that diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias in a patient and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm. The average cost of these units is $1,500 each. We currently have two units in the field for our 22 responders. Our goal is to get at least four more units in to the field so our responders will have more of these must needed AED’s to better medically assist you when needed. These units stay in the field issued to our responders to be used when they are needed. Please mark your calendar for this year’s annual Firefighters Celebration on June 24th, 2012 at the Grand Rapids Lions Club. The day starts with a pancake breakfast from 8am – 11am, music by the Bob Danczky & the Polish Memories Polka Band from 1:00-4:30 P.M. and Boogie & the Yo-Yo’s from 5:00-9:00 P.M. We will be having food, beverages, raffle(s), bingo, and children’s rides throughout the day. You can still purchase raffle tickets by stopping by the Town Hall, Fire Station, or from a member of this department. Raffle tickets will also be available the day of our event.
