27 years ago today, Deidre Week, then 11 years old, was struck and killed by a vehicle. She was traveling home on CTH HH near Vesper. The driver did not stop and fled the scene. The Wood County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate this tragedy. If you have any information, please call the Sheriff’s Department. If you would like to remain anonymous, contact Wood County Crime Stoppers.

An excerpt from a book that Deidre hadn't finished reading, prior to her death:
“Time goes on, and your life is still there, and you have to live it. After a while you remember the good things more often than the bad. Then, gradually, the empty silent parts of you fill up with sounds of talking and laughter again, and the jagged edges of sadness are softened by memories.” ~ Lois Lowry, A Summer to Die

The above is inscribed on Deidre's grave marker, along with the following: "Nothing will be the same, ever, without Deidre, but there's a whole world waiting, still, and there are good things in it."

This is one of my favorite photos, as it represents all of the tears shed for Deidre and, at the same time, the flowers are pink, Deidre's favorite color. Her favorite animals were horses and every other critter in between. If you wish to make a donation on behalf of Deidre, please contact the South Wood County Humane Society or Jeremiah's Crossing.

What a gorgeous weekend in Central Wisconsin! With that comes more pedestrians and cyclists being out on the roads.

Drivers, stay off your phones. You can respond to those calls, texts and notifications once your vehicle is parked. SLOW DOWN and put plenty of space in between your vehicle and pedestrians/cyclists when passing them on the road. Always keep your eyes on the road and watch for little ones that may dart out into traffic. Those little ones can be quick. Don't drive while impaired.

Pedestrians/Cyclists, don't always assume a driver can see you and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

It is everyone's responsibility, regardless of right of way laws, to keep the roads safe. Really, it's common sense. Keep your ego out of it.
