April is National Youth Sports Safety Awareness Month.

According to the CDC, 300,000 Student Athletes sustain concussions every year, with Ice Hockey, Football, and Basketball making up the top three sports that sustain the most concussions. Over the next few days we will talk about some facts and some myths about concussions so be sure to view, like, and share!

🧠 Concussion Basics: Let’s Start Here

A concussion is a type of brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head—or even a hit to the body that makes your head move rapidly.

👉 It’s not just “getting your bell rung.” It’s a real injury that needs attention.

FACT: You don’t have to lose consciousness to have a concussion.

đź’¬ Have you or someone you know experienced a concussion?

It’s Myth Monday!

Myth: You should put something in someone’s mouth while they’re having a seizure to stop them from swallowing their tongue.

Fact: This is a dangerous misconception. It is physically impossible to swallow your tongue. Putting an object in someone’s mouth can cause them to choke or break their teeth, and it puts you at risk of being bitten. The best thing you can do is clear the area of sharp objects and cushion their head.

It’s time for another Myth Monday! We often hear people say they aren’t sure when to start CPR, especially when they hear certain sounds. Let's clear this one up.

Myth: If someone is making gasping sounds, they are still breathing and don't need CPR.

Fact: Those gasps are called "agonal breathing" and they are actually a sign of cardiac arrest. If someone is unresponsive and only gasping, it’s time to start CPR and use an AED. Don’t wait for the gasping to stop: every second counts!

Knowing the difference between normal breathing and agonal breathing can save a life. Have you ever heard of agonal breathing before?

Is your child too young to learn how to save a life?

For today’s Myth Monday, we’re clearing up a common question we get from parents and teachers: Are kids too young to learn or perform CPR?

The Myth: Kids need to be teenagers or adults to help in an emergency.

The Fact: There is actually no official minimum age! While kids usually need to be around 10 to 12 years old to have the physical strength to perform deep chest compressions, younger children can still play a vital role.

Even if they aren't ready for full compressions, kids can learn how to recognize an emergency, call 911, and even bring an AED to the scene. The American Heart Association emphasizes that starting safety education early builds the confidence needed to act when it matters most.

At Wicked Safety Training, we love seeing families learn together. It’s about giving everyone the tools to be a hero in their community.

Have you talked to your kids about what to do in an emergency?

Myth Monday: "I could get sued if I perform CPR on a stranger."

This fear stops many people from helping, but here’s the good news: Good Samaritan laws exist in every state, including right here in Massachusetts. These laws are designed to protect bystanders who act in good faith to help someone in an emergency. As long as you aren't being intentionally reckless and you're just trying to help, the law has your back. Don't let a legal myth stop you from being a hero.

Myth: You need a current certification card to help in an emergency.

Fact: While training gives you the skills and confidence to act, you don't need a certificate to be a hero. In an emergency, any help is better than no help. If you see someone collapse, call 911 and start CPR( the dispatcher will guide you through it.)

Meet Grace, one of our dedicated lifeguard instructors here at WST. Grace has been with us for 3 years, teaching guards how to prevent emergencies, respond under pressure, and keep every pool deck safer.

She’s also finishing up her accelerated bachelor’s program, all while mentoring new guards and modeling exactly what professional, confident lifeguarding looks like.

When you train with Grace, you’re not just checking a box for certification—you’re learning real-world skills, practicing serious scenarios, and building the confidence to act when every second counts. We’re incredibly proud to have her on the WST team and can’t wait for you to meet her at your next lifeguard course.
