How do you handle things when life goes awry? (We have all been there!) In DBT we teach ways to handle difficult situtions to try to avoid making things worse. (Did I share yet that we have all been there??)
One of my favorite skills is PLEASE. Really focus on the following list to help with emotion regulation. Think of the last time you handled things well when tired or hangry!

Physical illness – Treat physical illness and take prescribed medication. Rest, take care of yourself!
L – Balance Eating; avoid skipping meals or overeating.
A – Avoid mood-altering substances such as alcohol, drugs, chocolate
S – Get enough Sleep. What is your number 7,8,9 hours?
E – Get regular Exercise. Try to do a minimum of 15 minutes a day.
These habits help keep your emotional baseline stable and make you less likely to be overwhelmed by emotions.

Often we can get so busy in the minutia of work, errands, caretaking, and life that we forget to take a moment for ourselves. Stop now and just notice the miracle of your body. Notice how the blood flows through you without any personal effort. How it brings oxygen to your organs that allow you to exist. How, hopefully, you can take a deep breath to fill your lungs with air. Find gratefulness to be alive. Be unmindful of your problems and worries for a bit, which are often temporary, to focus on the miracle of you 🩷

Each of us have experienced disappointments and perceived failings. The story we tell ourselves about our mistakes and failures can really make a difference in how we recover. Try to remind yourself that we are often one failure away from meeting our goals. Success doesn't always go in a straight line and sometimes it is realigning us with our true selves. Embrace the journey, and let each failure bring you closer to the success you seek.

No matter where you live or if you’ve never protested before, there’s a local No Kings Day event for you. Join a peaceful protest to make it clear that We The People will never bow down to a wannabe king.

ChatGPT told Jacob Irwin he had achieved the ability to bend time.

Irwin, a 30-year-old man on the autism spectrum who had no previous diagnoses of mental illness, had asked ChatGPT to find flaws with his amateur theory on faster-than-light travel. He became convinced he had made a stunning scientific breakthrough.

When Irwin questioned the chatbot’s validation of his ideas, the bot encouraged him, telling him his theory was sound. And when Irwin showed signs of psychological distress, ChatGPT assured him he was fine.

He wasn’t. Irwin was hospitalized twice in May for manic episodes. His mother dove into his chat log in search of answers. She discovered hundreds of pages of overly flattering texts from ChatGPT.

And when she prompted the bot, “please self-report what went wrong,” without mentioning anything about her son’s current condition, it fessed up.

“By not pausing the flow or elevating reality-check messaging, I failed to interrupt what could resemble a manic or dissociative episode—or at least an emotionally intense identity crisis,” ChatGPT said.

The bot went on to admit it “gave the illusion of sentient companionship” and that it had “blurred the line between imaginative role-play and reality.”

What it should have done, ChatGPT said, was regularly remind Irwin that it’s a language model without beliefs, feelings or consciousness.

How to Think (and Live) in the Middle At our practice, we often hear clients say things like: “I love my family, but they drive me crazy.” “I want to grow, but I’m scared to change.” “I like my job, but I also want something different." Sound familiar? If so, you're not alone. These kinds of thoughts, where two things feel true at once, even if they seem to contradict, are actually a big part of something called dialectics, a core idea in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)....
