Fun and competitive drill from :

You can only attack cross court, but both pins are open. Players are constantly cycling through after points so everyone has to play multiple positions. Middles are only blocking.

Emphasis for defense:
- reading and reacting to the setter to get to the appropriate side
- making a play on the ball
- defensive communication

Emphasis for pins:
- scoring while out of system
- defensive transition to attacking
- effective communication to setter for the appropriate set

Emphasis for blockers:
- make a strong diving move at the net to take up space
- read the approach of the attacker

Emphasis for setters:
- putting up a hittable ball in transition
- identifying which hitters are available in the middle of the rally
- staying neutral to hold the defense and blockers without giving away setting intent

Quick look at a midweek practice prior to a conference matchup.

Start with a split warmup:
- middles work on blocking assignments and getting used to tendencies at the net with the help of scouting video. Shoutout Coach Boos for that. (Linked)

- pins, libs and setters work on ball control and getting moving.

Move on to platform passing warmup with coach initiation.

Then switched to game court for rotation specific scouting.

Followed by competitive sixes to wrap it all up.

Quick clips from practice as we prepare for two more conference games this weekend.

Key takeaways:

knowing that the outside was unavailable and the middle making herself available.

cheering on her teammates

making the rounds and making sure everyone was appreciated as part of her success.

Tough serves and excellent passes from and .rdn

Sven with the clean outside approach when she realized she wasn’t passing.

Watch the OH here. did a lot of great things in this sequence.

1. Calls the ball in to help her teammates
2. Transitions out wide when she sees the pass is off the net
3. Swings high and hard into the seam in an out of system scenario.
4. Immediately recognizes the bic set and steps in to help close (as per the scouting report)
5. Keeps an eye on the ball but then immediately finds her primary responsibility after the block by the MH (good job )
6. Takes up a ton of court on the block and funnels to the libero

Unfortunately, didn’t get the point here, but that’s volleyball 🤷🏻‍♂️

Still a lot of good happening here. Volleyball becomes a lot easier when you can recognize the good in each play rather than just focusing on the outcome.

Here’s the belated version of Middle Monday since we didn’t have matches this weekend.

I already know I’m gonna get flak for this one from faceless accounts with no coaching experience because there’s no live setters and it’s not game like on account of the double touches, but FIWB.

To clarify, this is a warmup for middles while the rest of the team was working on something else.

It is a one ball off of a toss, followed by a block transition to a pin (we did both sides don’t worry, I just didn’t get video of it), followed by a ball out of the net, and a set.

The reason for the set is to get them to focus on playing the ball out of the net high enough for us to get a set and a swing, as well as for them to work on their hands in case of emergency. Last thing we want is for them to pull out their hands mid game and not be comfortable doing so.
