Does Medicare Cover Acupuncture?
The short answer: Yes—but with limits.
✅ Since 2020, Medicare covers up to 12 acupuncture visits per year for chronic low back pain only.
🚫 However, acupuncturists (the most qualified providers to offer acupuncture) cannot bill Medicare directly. This is why many seniors hear Medicare covers acupuncture but then are confused to find that their local acupuncturist can’t submit claims to Medicare.
Our national organization is working to change this confusing situation, but it will take an act of Congress to add acupuncturists to the list of approved Medicare providers. So for now, we offer this guidance:
💡 Medicare Advantage plans may offer expanded coverage:
✅ Some MA plans allow acupuncturists to bill directly.
✅ Some cover conditions beyond back pain, like neck pain and headaches.
If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, ask them:
1️⃣ Can my acupuncturist bill the plan directly, without first needing a Medicare denial?
2️⃣ Does my plan cover more than just low back pain?
👉 Bottom line: Medicare coverage is limited, but certain Advantage plans can expand access. Always check your benefits before starting care.
